Oregon Ivory Law About to Pass

Democrats in the Oregon legislature are passing whatever they wish with insufficient Republican legislators to stop them. The bill they have written specifically targets mammoth, elephant and rhino and includes both tusks and teeth regardless of whether the beast is extinct or not. Fines and prison time are serious. The bill will take effect on 1/1/2017. If ivory on a knife or gun can be proven to be made prior to 1976, it is exempt. If the ivory is less than 20% in volume of the gun or knife, it is exempt. This is also true for musical instruments. My guess is that grips sold separately are considered 100%. The bill is SB918 and is two pages long and can be found on line. Read it carefully. I am not a lawyer, and weasel words can be interpreted in satanic ways.

An anti-gun law was also passed this week. It is a wet dream time for liberals in Oregon.

Id "high tail" it out of Oregon so fast but then again I would have been long gone well before any of this. Too bad........Oregons a beautiful state!

Off to Knife Laws, this topic will get better traction here as it is worded in the OP.

they can pass these laws all day long but to enforce them is another thing . The new gun law , back ground checks on private sells , how are they going to enforce that ?

Well I can tell you this much....

I play the Bagpipes and have for 29 years. My Pipes are a set by Lawrie and were determined by carbon dating to be "pre-1900." Mine are adorned with nickel-silver half-mounts.

So you know what I'm talking about, these are "full mounts" [but in engraved metal] and the silver "tubes" are the ferrules....

Mine are "half-mounts" meaning, I lack the silver ferrules:

.......but my Pipe Major's are older still, dating back to pre-1800. His are adorned with full mounts of real Ivory with hammered and hand engraved silver ferrules.

Now..he's traveled back and forth from here to Scotland numerous times...but since the Federal ban on ivory import exists, he has to carry paperwork/documentation on those Pipes when ever he leaves and re-enters the US. IF for some reason one of those mounts get broken, he MAY get them repaired or replaced with real Ivory BUT ONLY IN Scotland and ONLY using Mammoth Ivory.

....and according to him, it is ridiculously expensive to get that done.

Also, I've seen Kron bagpipes made with mammoth ivory, sell for more than $7,000....

http://www.cekron.com/bagpipe5.htm

.....and some models even more still. I remember at one time David Naill offered a Custom set with FULL mammoth ivory mounts and silver ferrules for $30,000 and up to a 2 year waiting period. They no longer offer that service though.....

I would also point out that Native Americans [specifically the Inuit and other Eskimo tribes] are exempt from the Federal ban on Ivory use.

However, that doesn't stop governments from taking stupid "feel-good" actions in the misguided hopes of halting the illegal acts done on endangered species for their ivory.
