Organizing Trays

I use a tray to organize a batch of knives. Every part of a knife goes into a slip, and eventually during glueup the parts are used to build the knife. The old trays were created quickly with a scrap board. The slips weren't a uniform width, making the tray look messy. They didn't seperate out the pins, so it was hard to see that you had everything ready. To top it off the pins weren't easy to get out of the slips. BUT, even those old crappy trays helped a lot to keep things organized.

I've been thinking of a new tray design lately, especially as Dylan starts to do big boy sized batches. Today I drew them up in Acad, and made 4 trays. The pins are seperated into a little tray that is associated with each slip. The little pin tray has a rounded bottom so you can get the pins out easily. The slips are a uniform 1.5" wide, and will hold all the knife parts. Much better. But now I'm thinking of a third round of improvements...

The handles are from a scrap of red oak plank.

This is what they look like with some various knives and parts in them.

Awesome, it's nice to see this sort of streamlining and constant refinement. From these glimpses into your thought-processes, one can glean a bit insight as to the kind of maker you truly are.

Like the concept Andy, looks like some of the parts trays I've put together at some of the cabinet shops I've worked at. Whats the story on the blank with the handle hanging out in the last pic? Looks a bit like a shorter version of one of your 12" machetes.

Trays look great Andy.

They look even better with knives in 'em. :D

You seem to run a highly organized operation. I think it is reflected in the quality of work you produce too. Nice.

Good eye! That is one of the new chopper models. Not quite all the way profuiled yet. That one has a 7" blade. I'm also doing one with a 9.5" blade. Thats what the long blank in there is going to be. They were both kinda based on the 12" machete design. (Which is unbelievably cool IMHO.)

Still not organized enough to handle these orders. Gotta get a good database going. When I finish the orders I have I'm going to put a system of deterants in place designed to diminish the # of orders to zero.

I think the 12 inch machete design is cool too!! Anything based on that shape is must-see-TV!!

Cool! I think with the 12" machete added to what I have...and the other knife I want lol... I'll be pretty much squared away for anything, but I'm still looking forward to seeing those new choppers :)

nice!

i would have just used an Akro bin for each knife and a 35mm film can for the pins.

With bins like that you can't organize a whole batch, and it doesn't help with keeping everything together, and no spread around the whole shop. Imagine doing a 30 knife batch and each one having a bin. Yikes. If you need to put down something hot, you've got no bench space.

Yea, that Scandi Hunter is going to be a one of a kind. Won't be Scandiing Hunters anymore.

Its actually mine. I sent you an email the other day and happened upon that picture yesterday. I've got the money ready, looks great in the box.

Yea. I figured. I've been sanding it today. No red liner though. I did a handle that way, but it wasn't thick enough, so I knocked it off and went this route. Hope you like it!!! The blade has the prettiest spalting I've seen yet!!!
