I use a tray to organize a batch of knives. Every part of a knife goes into a slip, and eventually during glueup the parts are used to build the knife. The old trays were created quickly with a scrap board. The slips weren't a uniform width, making the tray look messy. They didn't seperate out the pins, so it was hard to see that you had everything ready. To top it off the pins weren't easy to get out of the slips. BUT, even those old crappy trays helped a lot to keep things organized.
I've been thinking of a new tray design lately, especially as Dylan starts to do big boy sized batches. Today I drew them up in Acad, and made 4 trays. The pins are seperated into a little tray that is associated with each slip. The little pin tray has a rounded bottom so you can get the pins out easily. The slips are a uniform 1.5" wide, and will hold all the knife parts. Much better. But now I'm thinking of a third round of improvements...

The handles are from a scrap of red oak plank.
This is what they look like with some various knives and parts in them.
