This one has me stumped. A friend of mine in England uses this phrase constantly, as do most younger members of his family. But no one knows where it came from!

"Keep that out, keep that shut, or get those blackened."

Anyone know the source? (Great line, btw  )

I was unable to get any results on the Internet Movie Database.

There are more search options there, I didn't explore 'em all.

I don't know what movie it might be from but it certainly sounds like a slogan from WW2 that would have been broadcast constantly during the blitz.

This is a real stumper, ain't it?

At first, I thought it might have come from "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" but I can't find any reference. I'm thinking that "...get those blackened..." may refer to a punch in the eye?

WW II, during the German bombings of England, there would be blackout alarms. The bombers, during night runs, would use ambient light from houses, etc to aim and drop the bombs.

The saying was used as a reminder for people to extinguish all light at night, so the bombers couldn't aim effectively.
