FOR SALE: WITHDRAWN
I spent a lot of time researching this on the web. Finally went to someone who I figured would know for sure, a local gunsmith/knife dealer (been in business in the same spot for over 40 years). I was right, he did. Turns out he not only knew the name of this model but had a close business relationship with Al Mar and his wife. Still carries a lot of their new products. Once I had the actual name of the knife it was a lot easier to confirm its background. So this info is on the up and up.
Original (made prior to the mans death) Al Mar Buzzard with wood scales and brass liners. Its around 20 years old, maybe 25. The info I got states that the knife originally came with ivory micarta scales but the man I talked to said he had seen some pictures of a few made with wood scales. Hed never actually seen one up close. Al Mar produced about 7 folders during this period and the Buzzard was the largest of them. The blades steel was known for its strength and edge retention. Seki-Japan is stamped on the blade. The gunsmith told me that he had once skinned 5 whitetails with a similar model and the blade was still shave sharp. It has the original red logo. After Als death they went to a black logo for sometime and just in the past few years went back to the red logo. Ive cleaned it up some with Flitz and it really brighten up. You can see this in the photos. Theres no rust on the blade. In fact the only bit of rust that I can see is down in the bottom where the lock mechanism is and this is very small and appears to be surface rust at that. Wouldnt take much to remove it. Mechanism and function is flawless. Id forgotten how beautiful this knife is. The amount and thickness of brass on this knife is amazing. You dont see a non-custom knife made this way today. It is one stout and sturdy knife. Ive had the knife for about 15 years now. It originally sold for approximately $350.00. The gunsmith stated that it should go easily for $500.00. Im thinking that might be a little steep. I found a website in Japan that has pictures of them, with wood scales ( I included a pic of this, #3 is closest to the wood scales on mine ). They were all sold, but near as I can figure they sold for approximately 40,000 to 50,000 yen. Comes to $360.00 to $450.00 US dollars. So Im thinking that $400.00 would be a fair price. USCON only please.
