I have been fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to buy an original version Chinook :) Thanks, Basemetal

This thing is something else, boys. You can see where the blueprints for the newer G-10 heavy duty came from.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was the heaviest folder Spyderco made, and has an incredible lock failure rating. HUNDREDS of pounds of pressure.

It feels like a real bruiser in my pocket :D

Late evening here and my computer room is as dark as Count Dracula's castle, but you'll see the Chinook -that's the main thing :p

Respect !

I just got a Chinook II. What is the difference from the original version....beside the blade steel?

The Chinook II is more ergonomic, and it has skeletonized steel liners to keep the weight down. And it's tip-up/down left/right carry.

Ted Voorde, I'll be damned, a C-15 Spyderco/Terzula Clipmate as an avatar! That's classy, dude! What sort of scales have you on your's? I have black anodized aluminum on mine, as I do on my C-19.

Thanks FullerH, actually, it's a C19 with aluminum scales. It has been my EDC for the last months, so the scales are a bit more worn at the moment.
This is the bigger version of the pic I took some time ago.

Supposedly the lockstrength of the Chinook II is even higher (though not by much) than of the Chinook I.

Ted, those C-15 & C-19 knives are getting pretty scarce and the aluminum ones even scarcer.

I agree the Chinook II is more ergonomic, but the original is a "cooler" looking knife in my opinion. Did Spyderco only make the Chinook I in 440: I'd love to get my hands on one in VG-10 or S30V. That would be badass.

They made them also in S30V, only for a very short time though. One was on Ebay some weeks ago. About $130 IIRC.

Both the Chinook 1 and 2 are great knives.

I have one of each in S30V. I actually prefer the C1 a little better as the one I have locks up much better than my C2.

Both models have their advantages and disadvantages. I prefer the blade shape of the I but the grip shape of the II. I solved this problem by grinding out the handle of my I to give me something much closer to the II's shape and depth of indentation. :)

I have a Manix and a Chinook I, so lets say, a new and an old school MBC rated heavy duty Spyderco folder, right? I'd say that the pivot pin looks weaker, and that the lock doesn't have anymore the Boyd detent (correct me if I'm wrong) on the new generation. So from this, although if the Chinook I is a pain to carry due to its weight, I think there is no substitute anymore for such strenght :p :D

Neither generations of the Chinook have the Boye dent.

Aaah...? at least the lock notch has not a flat profile at the bottom, it has a a small dent toward the handle, isn't it what a Boyd dent is?

Although no longer my EDC, the Chinook 1 is my favorite Spydie, just edging out my Rookie.
I will have to pick up another, one of these days.
