I'm so close to grabbing a Commander. I know it's a bit of a subjective
question but how do they pocket? Are they pretty comfortable as an
edc or a bit too big?
I have a cqc7 and a horseman and love 'em.

I've got a full-size Commander and it fits any pocket well. Emerson folders are nice and flat and the G-10 is grippy, so they fit anywhere but don't slide around.

I've been a fan of the mini commander... it's pretty big for a mini

Agreed. The Mini Com is about as big as "full size" knives from most other makers. The regular Commander is really quite an imposing knife, and due to its somewhat odd wide shape when closed, I don't feel that it pockets well at all. Even the Mini can be a little difficult to get in and out of my pocket if I'm wearing closer-fitting jeans. I'm a small guy, so YMMV, but I do not consider the full-size Commander to be a reasonable EDC piece. If you want a Commander to carry (and you should, since it's a fantastic knife), get a Mini Com.

I've got a super commander and I love the feel of the knife. It fits well in the pocket and suits my needs. I do tend lo like large blades though, so I'm a little biased.

I have several Commanders and mini-commanders, and absolutely love them. The blade profile is my favorite of all the Emerson knives, particularly in a plain blade.

Bought it the other day, great knife! Quite surprised how lite it was given it's
size.
Question? Were they always made with titanium liners? Someone suggested
that at one time they were stainless? I was just wondering if my 2006 version
is ti?

The lockbar has always been Ti, I don't they switched to steel liners for the non lock side till late 2009? Haze will know the answer. So, I would say yours is all Ti.

If it's an 06 then it's safe to say thay it does have Ti liners. IIRC it was not untill late 07 the SS liner was used, and that was only on a couple of models as well.

This is a subject of some debate and I don't think I have ever seen a solid answer as to when the change was actually made in full and on what knives the change started with.

Haze,
Thanks for that I appreciate your input! I did notice that the locking liner seems to be a bit thinner
on the Commander as compared to my Horseman and CQC-7 which seem to sport a bit thicker liner.

i always heard the k'bit was the 1st to go to Ti/ss liner vs ti/ti, in '07, so '06 and back should all be ti/ti, whatever model, i have also heard more than one story about when the changed, about the only constant in all of them was that the k'bit was the 1st to change, and the changes started in '07, other than that who knows lol?

my '08 production '13 is ti/ti FWIW.

what year commander is it?

IIRC they had the thin liners from ~ '01 or so 'till '06 or maybe '07 then went to the thicker, if its a recent one it should be thick, IIRC anyway, but it can get confusing for sure, supposedly the fit and design of the liner lock matters a lot more than the thickness, a good example is the spyderco millie, which has as thin a lock as anything by anyone yet rarely seems to have issues, that said i do prefer the thicker ones myself.

Emerson full sized knives (other than the smaller ones like the 7) are relegated to pocket carry or maybe sheath only imo. Unless you are a big guy; and I am most certainly not.

As for using a big knife for EDC, it depends on your cutting skills. If you pay attention to what you are doing and have a steady hand they arent too big.

Emerson Commander in any size whether its Super or Mini or even regular as a EDC its all :thumbup::thumbup: You'll never regret

Consider the Serrations too b/c its very helpful

+1

I had a commander for awhile. It was a great knife but it didn't fit my had as well as my 8 and mini 8 so I gave it to a friend as a promotion present. I will say that it didn't ride in my pocket as well as my 8s only because its wider when closed. Not a big issue what so ever. It wouldn't keep me from liking the knife had the fit to my hand been a little better.
