i tried the search function but couldn't narrow it down enough to find the information without spending all day reading posts.

What kind of steel is the blade in the original Leatherman (first couple of years of production)? Always wondered because I have never been able to get a decent edge on the blade.

Thanks in advance.

i can get a decent edge on my original wave, but can't get it to retain that edge.

is it possible to get replacement main blades from better steel?

If it's like my "new" wave, then it's not user serviceable. You'd have to send it to Leatherman since it has a proprietary torx-looking head.

I have one of the original Leatherman tools (back when they made just one) and have never been able to get a good edge on it either. My Wave was the same way until I sent it back to LM (for something else), now it takes a screaming edge.

Thanks for the info. Seems like I am not the only one who finds the original blades to be less than ideal.

I also have a Wave(about 5 years old) and the blade on it is much better. I have used the other tools more than the blade, so my sharpening experience has been limited with it, but it seems to take and hold an edge much better than the original PST.

more like just plain old 420 stainless steel.
i can't think of any other steel grade from that period of manufacture which could have been built to withstand some expected 25 years of service in the outdoors without rusting to bits.
