original tomcat

The Sog Tomcat WAS a really nice folding knife. Now I'd say that it is a good knife, but HEAVY! The materials used in modern folders offer bigtime upgrades. Either way, you have a good knife there. Use it in good health.

"What's my knife worth" posts are considered selling here which may or may not be frowned upon. Even if you were a gold or higher member this would be the wrong place for this type of post. Welcome to the forums! Poke around and stay a while!

I'm pretty new here and I've never posted before so I'm not sure this is in the right place or not, I apologize for my ignorance. But i have an older i believe original sog tomcat with a spear point blade. Is it worth anything and is it a decent knife? I got it for pretty cheap recently. It has some side to side blade play and it is a little off center when closed but still feels like a pretty solid knife. I'll try and get some pictures up later in the day. Thanks guys

Well...they have some side to side blade play and they are little off center when closed, but they still feel like pretty solid knives. :)

You have the knife! And it sounds like you know about knives! So the best way to find out if it is decent is for you to use it.

I'll say it again, "I might buy knife X...is it any good?" I get. "I bought knife X...it's good." I get. "I bought knife X...is it any good?" I don't get! :D

I believe that the "spear point" blade is a knife named the Sogwinder. There was also large variant called the Sogwinder II (I own this knife). There were available in the early 90s, but I don't know for how long.

The Tomcat and Tomcat II had Bowie style blades.

I'm a trial and error kinda guy. I like knives do if i find a decent looking knife for what seems to be a good deal i buy it. And i did do some looking on google but i thought what better place to find out about a knife then this great forum. I didn't know it was full of people that were just gonna tell me to google it. If that's all you have to offer then keep it to yourself

Did you want to know if its decent in terms of functionality, or decent in terms of value?

If it's "value"...then you are going to have to do some Googling. It's the rules. To offer more would be breaking the rules.

SOG is a big name company. If the knife isn't abused, it's not going to break. It's a fine knife.

All I'm saying is that the only way one can get to know a knife is by using it. If I say "It's ergos are terrible."...for you they might be great.

Go out and use it!

I have the knife i have used it i know somethings about it and i have some likes and some dislikes i would like to hear other peoples input. I heard yours the first time around i didn't need to hear it again. So if you don't have this knife and your not going to tell me how you like it then go away

"go away"? -Why should he?

Marcinek did tell you what he thinks about it, he said it was "a fine knife". Perhaps you should learn some manners before engaging people in a public forum.

So what makes you think that you can be so lazy that you expect others to do all the groundwork (Google) that you should have done yourself? Why don't you share some of your observations about a knife that is in your possession?

BTW, I do have a SOG Tomcat. It is a huge boat anchor. Solid but way to big, heavy and clunky to carry around. No clip so it bounces around in your pocket. Blade is way too thick, not easy to sharpen. The blade is a pain to draw. Way too many choices that are far better in design, blade steel, weight, practicality, etc. Too thick for carving, chores, even too thick to open cartons with. An interesting design that was novel for the time, but surpassed by other brands and designs long ago.

Okay thanks for not helping guys i never thought it would be so hard to talk knives here with out all the better than thou attitude but you guys showed me the light ill be on my way now

As far as dedicated penetrators go, it's functionally excellent. It won't, say, slice, as well as a knife designed for slicing (like a thin bladed full flat grind), though.

But if one is looking for a "stabby" folder....it's a great choice.
