So enough about knives. I take some time off of these forums to look at the new Orvis catalog that came today--you know, Orvis--very high-quality outdoor stuff, etc.

So why am I posting this here, rather than in Gadgets and Gear? So I can say that the catalog features a couple of gen-u-wine handmade knives by that well-know maker, Daniel Winkler. Way cool.:D

They also have "The Sharpest Knife In The World"
:D
I really liked the ventile shirts...until I saw the price

One of my friends used to work at the Orvis store in St. Louis. I'd go in there to talk to him or show him a new knife, and would be amazed(horrified is more the word) at the prices. Those people have to be smoking crack, to charge those prices. But, there'd be a steady stream of snobby looking rich folks coming in and buying the stuff, so maybe I'm the one smoking crack for not opening up a store like that!

winkler has been in the orvis catalog quite a few times. kelgin as well

orvis stuff can be quite pricey. rods are so-so... but the orvis battenkill reel is still one of the best values in flyfishing. also like the clothes :)

They have a store in Boston, where the seem to specialize more in clothing than the outdoors, if you know what I mean. I do like their catalog, even if it is more suited to the British grouse-hunting club and Andover preppies than to my idea of what to wear tramping through the woods. I guess that I shouldn't criticise--I snicker at someone who would spend $300 on a shooting vest--but don'tr blink an eye at spending far more on a knife.....

If anyone wants to see, there are pics of the two Winkler models on their website - there is a run of 20 bowies, and 30 hunters. Nice looking work as always.

I always stop in the Orvis store when I am in SF................

nice stuff....................and there is NEVER anyone in it??? :(

well, once in a while there is some old guy looking at fly rods!!!

Dan and Karen are not just a great craftspeople, they are considerate, generous, and classy folks. Any of thier work is good value...Take Care...Ed

I guess that makes me a "snobby looking rich folk"? ;)

I 'discovered' Orvis a few years ago and usually buy stuff when it goes on 'sale' (in fact I was at the Orvis store in Williamsville, NY yesterday and there was a lot of stuff on sale at 50% off) Yes, some of the prices do give you heart palpitations, but I can honestly say I have never had an Orvis item 'wear out'. I buy Orvis (when the price is right) for the same reason I buy Filson bags - I only have to buy it once.

Yep, you fall into that catagory all right. ;) :D

FYI, I did buy several things in the store; all on sale or at my friend's employee discount. They DO have great stuff.

I have an Orvis stockman which is one of my favorite slipjoints. And yes that includes Schatt & Morgan, vintage Case, Boker, Schlieper, Canal Street (terrific knives BTW) and various others in my collection.

Gorgeous quality. Handle shield Orvis, tang stamp Camillus.

Looks like the Bowie is no longer available from Orvis. Sold out I presume. Anyone have a large pic of that particular knife? Thanks, John
