Hey all. As the subject states, if all goes well, my son will be graduating Marine boot camp at Paris Island here in a few months. He also turned 18 while there. I'm thinking about an Osborn 940, and some titanium scales.

I'm kinda just starting to get into knife collecting (I don't even have a 940 for myself yet). The 940 seems to me that it would be a great heirloom knife for him to keep forever. (granted it doesn't get lost/destroyed)

Any other suggestions for a graduating Marine? Budget, around $300.00

Thanks all!!

Do you know what his MOS will be?

Anything 03XX and it's likely he'll find himself in some fairly rough environments...

I'd go with something a little more crayon-eater friendly (i.e. tougher) than the 940.

How about an Adamas or maybe an older ZT 030X series?

Best of luck to your budding Jarhead.

Thanks Jarhead, I’ll check those out. He’s in Intel, so I’m guessing not as rugged?
02XX huh?

All things are possible in the USMC!!!

But yeah, likely spending lots of time behind the front lines...

Unless he's going Ground Intel...

That's an opportunity to find yourself attached to special operations (Recon/Raiders) battalions.

The 940 is a great folder, and while it carries thin and light it can take a beating. If you want a tanky folder, there are definitely stouter options out there. If I could go back in time and change what pocket knife I carried when I was in the Army, I would have loved a G-10 940 or a Bugout with nice G-10 scales, though in reality I probably still would have mostly carried my Leatherman anyway.

If you do go with a 940, IMO the G-10 versions are the best of the bunch. Comfortable and grippy, not unpleasant in the cold like the aluminum or as slick as the CF versions. I've owned quite a few different 940 variations, and the 940-1701 (a dealer exclusive, easy to find if you google it) is my favorite of the bunch. G-10 handles for comfort and utility, and the red C-Tek inserts for a pop of color and style:

940 is perfect for Intel. You don't need something heavier. He won't need it.

If you think he would like it, you could have BM put USMC on the blade.

First, I will say.......excellent job raising the kind of young man that would join the Corps ! He will not regret this choice.

Knife. .....if you are spending $300, get this 940 and I would look at a good multitool like A LM wave and have his initials engraved on it. He will find so many uses for it living on base without access to a garage full of tools.

I second this! A 940 or 940-2 and a good multitool.
Congratulations for you and for your son!

A no vote on the 940 here. I just don’t think it’s a great knife and am opposed to the durability of the axis locK springs. Get him a Manix 2, PM2, Police 4 or a solid Cold Steel like a Recon or Ultimate Hunter and a good Leatherman. I have no suggestions for just one at $300...maybe $400+.

I like the name behind the AFO. Looking that up I stumbled upon the BM Freek Black/Grey G-10 with red liners. I like the red for the marine flag, maybe a brass thumb stud to add some yellow to complete the USMC theme?

Also saw a video where some Dutch bushcrafters beat the tar out of it and it survived.

Thanks again all!

My nephew marine got from me...an izula 2, leatherman (don't remember which), ScrapYard Skinner, some variant of a serrated Spyderco Salt...was great for his time in Japan/Pacific area...and a couple other things I don't recall. Most of them I had laser etched with his name, rank, USMC and year...although that made them special for him and he didn't want to use them much!

For me in the Army Guard...I have a bunch of go to knives...couple leathermans, Swamp rat Bandicoot, Winkler Belt Knife...a few Emerson folders, SAKs...ZT 0562...Emerson kwaiken neck knife...a Joe Watson...RMJ S13...and a few others. That's what happens when you're a knife nut. My primaries are the bandicoot, emerson 15, SAK, kwaiken and leatherman though.

I don't consider the 940 a combat folding knife but a 810 Contego in some CPM-M4 would be a serious knife.Others BM knives to consider.....the Turret,Adamas,Triage
