I bought a BM 940-2 a couple weeks ago and I noticed it had a lot of side to side play. In order to remove that play I tightened it, but then it wouldn’t open or close well. So after spending some time breaking it in, I haven’t been able to solve this problem. The centering is also off which doesn’t bother me as much.

Are these things normal to 940-2’s or should I send it in, or does anybody have any knowledge on how to fix these things?

Is it normal? No!
Is it common with Benchmade? Somewhat, it’s happened to me on more than one occasion.
Should you send it in? Yes, because it will be done correctly and it’s on their dime.

No, not normal. Pivot adjustment can be a bit finicky on a new knife, but if it has been broken in as you said - you should be able to find the sweet spot where it still opens smoothly as well has having none-to-little side to side play.

I'd send it back to BM or the dealer you bought it from.
Thanks for the advice

Benchmade will absolutely fix it. My experience with them is terrific communication and very fast turnaround regarding repairs. Just what you would expect/hope for with a U.S. manufacturer. Give them a call.
