Anyone use them? Seems like one would be just the ticket for working in the concave parts of blade/handle profiling but couldn't find any reference to them when searching.

Thanks...Curt

Is`that the same as a spindle sander? I've seen them in fotos of a number of makers' "shop tours".

Think that's what I intended to say. The description does say 'Spindle'

Here is a link to what I'm thinking about.....

yeah, that's what i was thinking of. I've seen them in shop fotos, so some knifemakers use them. I could see where they may be good for some operations like finger-grooving hidden-tang handles. that said, that's not much abrasive per drum and I'd question how long they'd last on metal.

Personally, if I had a grinder that would accept a small-wheel attachment, that would be preferred.

Have to agree that there isn't much abrasive there. Probably will work ok for final square up before finish works starts.

Besides, every time I try to rationalize another toy like this, my wife gives me the  look.

Thanks..Curt

I thought about one and decided to go with a small wheel attachment instead. The sanding drums are rather expensive and only available up to about 180 grit. With the small wheel I can use any belt in the shop.

I have one and it's great for finishing up the scales to the tang. Isn't much good on steel but it really lets you get up close on the handle.

At present I buy the sanding drums and arbors from Sears. You can put the arbor in your small drill press. You get the same oscillation by lowering and raising the head on you drill press, manually. As you said you don't get much wear out of them but anything works in a pinch. Hope to get a sander like the one from Beaumont Metal Works, someday.

Another thought. Make sure you get an arbor small enough to fit through the center hole in your drill press table.

The contour grinder from Rob si the way to go..the drum are very$$$
Rob has an ad on now that the machine will run 2x72 belts I had one running the 2x48 belts and it brought my fit and finish really up to what I was looking for...besides the KMG the contour grinder was one of the most used machines in the shop...well worth the investment

had one of those that mounts to the drill press actually. Did a lot of work with it "early on" and have used it recently to help clean out handle slots (hard to explain)....anyway, for profiling it's probably ok, but as mentioned, the small wheel setup (which I have) is much, much better. Worth every penny...never looked back after getting it.

After thinking about it a little, I remembered that home depot had one on the shelf. Stopped by there on the way home to have a closer look. The one they carry (rigid tools brand) not only uses the sleeves but also has what looks like a 4"X24" belt that ocsillates. THis has some possibilities but, a $200 experiment...might have to give this a bit more thought...

Thanks eveyone.....
