OT/ 9mm Carbines?

IMO, the Beretta Storm is the best on the market. It takes the same magazines as any of the model 92's. You can add a rail for optics mounting. I take mine along to steel plate shoots. The 16+" barrel makes the 9mm round come alive. I have one in 9mm and 45auto and enjoy both of them.
My next pick would be the Ruger model

I have a .223. :D
I shot my Brother's MP-5.
For short range encounters...I like the 9.
Thanks for the recs. I'll check them out.

MSAR is coming out with a bullpup one this summer. Takes glock mags, and they will be will be producing their own 30 rounders!!

I worked with a guy that had an MP5 chambered in .45, if I'm not mistaken. He said it was a lot of fun to shoot. I was going to suggest an MP5 but I heard they were ten grand+... about 5 years ago, now a days I'm sure they are a lot more. An MP5 chambered in 10mm would be a wrecking machine.:D

Have fun on your quest Lycosa. And I agree... for close encounters a 9mm is nice, you don't have to worry about over penetration as much as you would with the .223.

I don't have one, but I have shot a friends. I borrowed his Bushmaster Carbon 15 in 9mm for a side (rifle) match at a local IDPA match. Shooting at 100 yard steel was hilarious. "Pow", SHHHH... wait for it, wait for it, "dink". Of course you could only hear it if you were quiet. Was fun for up close stuff, though. I saw another guy's son using a AR with a 10mm upper. That thing was awesome up close & personal and I'd say would be better at distance. If cost of ammo isn't a factor, I'd look into the 10mm or .45acp.

I have 9mm AR-15 that I built.

10.5" RRA flat top upper - stag lower and LPK - ramped bolt and M16 hammer.

Colt mags are a way to go - although the one pro-mag I have seems to be behaving.

Once I'll shoot this barrel out I have a BCM chrome lined to go on.

+1, thats the one I was waiting for. These things are pretty short too.

Olympic Arms also makes a 9mm AR type Carbine that takes Glock Mags. Lone Wolf Was supposed to come out with atleast a lower for the same. Not sure if they were making the full gun.

.

I also have a Beretta Storm in 9mm and really like it. They aren't too expensive ( I got mine barely used for $450) and since they take the mdl 92 handgun mags, they are cheap and plentyfull. I don't want to have to many different size ammo to worry about, so it was either 9mm or .45 (it comes in .40 also, but I don't have any .40 handguns), so when this used 9mm came up, that is what I got. I wanted a short range accurate rifle that was compact and it works for me, I have a .308 PTR91 for long range.

:D

Just remember, when talking about the 9mm AR type platform, it is not gas operated as the .223 and other rifle calibers. These are blowback operated.

Have a look at the Kel-Tec. Very reliable, inexpensive at $400 MSRP, and folds up to a small package. Well, small for a rifle - 16". Mine takes Glock mags, but they've got versions for Beretta, S&W, and maybe another one (Sig? I forget.) Warranty service is great, too.

There's a forum with lots of info on the Kel-Tecs - http://www.ktog.org

That's badass! But I don't even wanna guess how much it will cost, especially with the current market.

I have a Ruger PC 9,Takes Ruger P series mags which can be 10 to 30 rounds.I've had mine for 4 or 5 years.Reliable even when it's "dirty"and accurate for this type of Gun.The down side is It's pretty heavy for a Carbine.

No matter how you dress it up it's still a pistol round. Putting it in a rifle platform means you're wasting the bonus's of a long gun by using pistol ammo. IMHO they may be fun but not too practical. That's why there aren't a lot of new sub guns but bunches of SBR.
YMMV

lunde does not have one?? :)
Bob---I understand. I have the .223 for long distance. :D That 9mm dropped a lot of folks in WW2.

(this was only about a 1/2 clip)

MP5's sure are grin inducing. The price is prohibitive though.

when you use it in a short barrel smg, a 9mm will kill you dead'er than dead. The Navy Seals, and many many others around the world know this. Especially with hollow point rounds. Very very little kick or muzzle rise in that caliber for a mp5 sized gun. Against opponents with body armor, not as great.

One problem with using a carbine in 9mm is that you can actually see a small decrease in round velocity by the time it leaves the barrel. That round was meant to burn the power in a 5-6 inch barrel. I had a swat guy tell me he crono'ed his 9mm AR-15 style carbine and it actually was about 200 feet per second slower than the same ammo out of his pistol.

5.56 ammo out of a pistol length barrel will not kick too much. It will punch thorough body armor better, and will give better long range performance too. But you also get a huge increase in muzzle blast as well.

My Carbon 15 pistol was the blastiest beast I have ever fired. The pressure wave from the unburned power is awesome. Hip shooting a 5.56 round with a 7 inch barrel and a compensator gives for some interesting blast effect on your face. Make sure you have eye protection! A carbine length does much better with that, it gives the power more time to burn.

Pumping a 40 round clip does bring grins let me tell you. (sadly, this one is no longer with me).
