OT: A couple of Kershaw's

Just saw this Kershaw Outcast knife (model 1079) and I really like it. Kershaw is one of those companies along with Ka-Bar, that when you look at their production knives you realize just how much all the other companies are ripping you off. Black teflon coated D2 steel, a 10" razor sharp blade and glass-filled nylon handle and kydex sheath for about $65 street price (about $100 SRP.) A nice "little" knife for when you don't have a khuk with you!

I have really become a fan of D2; the stuff has a high carbon content _and_ high chromium content for rust resistance but is still sharp as hell and seems to hold an edge forever. I have a couple of Ka-Bar Impact knives in D2 and they are scary hard and sharp.

Here is a link to a pic of the knife. If you have this months Blade mag there is an add for it on page 17. This link says it is black ti-ni coated, but Kershaw says it is black teflon. I think they are two different things and that Ti-Ni is much more expensive.

Also, while I was looking this up I came across a listing of Kershaw's 30th Anniversary lockback knife, SRP is $500 in a wood box. This kind of cracked me up (and made me happy!) because I have this exact knife sans wood box, in as-new condition bought in 1983. I should say "traded" as I had no $. This one gun dealer (who ended up cheating me and several other folks later on), had this knife in his display cabinet. I traded him a pair of Pachmayer signature grips for a 1911 with the Colt medallion embedded in them, and a new oversized 1911 barrel bushing for the new knife. About $50 worth of goods. It has black pakka wood handles and brass bolsters, and is a very heavy well made knife. Came with a brown leather belt sheath. One of my few lucky buys! :D Athough there must be a lot of these old ones out there. I don't see how they can take a knife that even with inflation should be worth about $120 retail, and add a wood box and sell if for 4 times that. (?) Anyway, I'm not arguing with them!

Here's a pic:

Regards,

Norm

Dawgone Norm that's a sweet deal. I like D2 as well. Another company that is using D2 is Queen. If you like traditional pocketknives you might want to give them a try. They're made in the USA and the quality is pretty good. A good place to find them is Cumberland Knife Works

Steve

Edited: Kershaw is a great company. I bought a used Rainbow Leek that was missing the safety. I emailed them and asked to buy a safety. Received an email the next day saying that they had shipped one at no charge. It arrived the following day, Priority Mail. Can't beat that.

Well I'll be damned!!!! :footinmou Steve I have been hunting for a really high end trapper with decent steel for longer than I like to think about and here you post a link to where they can be found!!!! :D
And mighty reasonable at $45.00 too!!!! I can hardly believe it!!!! I think I'll go ahead and order it and have it shipped to my daughter's address in Phoenix so I'll get it while we're there instead of having to wait.
Rep points for you bud!!!!:D

Yvsa,
I think you'll like it. I have a stockman and a folding hunter, and HAD a small stockman and a canoe. (gifts to my nephews) They are kind of like HI products. They might come a little gritty, and not terribly sharp, but they are solidly built and have great steel. The Carved Stag Bone that you pictured is grippy and pretty! If you don't like it, I'll buy it from you. :)

great!!!!

wow, mother of pearl folder. should i go for the ostent... ostin... flashy?

Kershaw is also doing a colaboration w/ Spyderco (the Spyker). Each company seems very respectful of the other, and it makes me like each even more.

Dayum, Norm, that is a nice camp knife. I have liked Kershaws and carried them for 25 years, and agree with you on their value.

Spectre, send me one of those them folders on my b-day coming up :D

That Kershaw looks very promising. I wonder what the quality of the sheath is like.

Another interesting link on the Cumberland site - Moore Maker. Traditional penknives, high carbon steel, very reasonable prices, made in the USA. Makes you wonder how a foreign "tactical" folder can cost so much, when a 3-bladed stockman with much more labor in it is half the price.

Kershaw makes some nice folders, and they make a knife for all uses/pocketbooks.

Look at this beauty, for about 40USD:

I wonder how soft that handle material is....is it Cold Steel Kraton "quality"?

If it was like Respirene-C, that knife would be absolutely amazing for the price.
Neetones check out the website for it, look under applications. Appears to be pretty good stuff, just wonder how it holds up to DEET.

Ferrous, I used to have some of those bootknives. I picked them up in Germany back in '85; they were sold under the name of Othello. They were quite nice, especially since they only cost me about $20 apiece because of the favorable exchange rate.

I'm a happy camper today.:) I called Will Horn again Thursday evening after not being able to reach him and ordered my Queen Trapper. Man this thing is a real beauty!!!! Wasn't hair poppin sharp and although a good stroppin helped it still didn't meet my requirements but a few minutes on the EZElap and the Spydeyco ceramic and strop and it is now super scary sharp!!!! :D I can't hardly believe how easy it was to sharpen and with D-2 blades at 60 Rc it should hold one helluvan edge!!!! The blades are nice and thin like a real quality pocketknife should be and the finish is absolutely superb!!!!
I'm going to be checking out some of the fixed blade Queen knives!!!! :D  :D

Check out this light to medium duty hunter/skinner that's reminiscent of a Woodcraft.
It has a D-2 steel 3-7/8" blade and 7-3/4" oal, plenty enough for the kind of work it's made for and only $37.00 at Cumberlands!!!!

Uncle Yvsa, thanks for posting that fixed blade! I am ordering one tomorrow! If I get mine before you I will do a review ;)

Yvsa, you are one of a small group of people I know who upon showing a tool impart a wonderful sense of value. After it's been in your hands it is simply nicer.
I've never actually seen you handle a tool, but I already know your hands and the tool have a compact together.
Don't ask me how I know this, but I do.

You're welcome Steve.:) Ain't that a sweet little thang? I didn't get my scale out to measure my Fieldcraft but I'm thinking they are similar in size. :D
Lots of people just don't take into consideration the innocent looking hunting knives, the same size as all this so called tactical stuff, of being really good for self defense.
I read an article some time ago about an experienced and older Sergeant carrying a Marble's Woodcraft for self defense. Smart man.:D  :D

Edit:
Steve you'll most likely get yours first since we're leaving next Tuesday for Phoenix if everything goes alright.
I'll be looking forward to your review!!!! :D
