OT: Airport security question--will they see them?

I just got a military/police equipment catalog and noticed they have a totall non-metallic knife made from glass fibers and plastic. Looks like it would be a good stabbing weapon. Also, saw ceremic blades on tv the other night that are SHARPER than steel.

Question is, will the airport metal detectors see these?

Obviously I ask this with regard to terrorists hijacking planes with these NOT out of a desire to circumvent airline security myself!!

Metal detectors wouldn't, other scans would, like the new body scanning devise that has caused a flap because you'll see EVERTHING.

They have new "density" detectors that they are just starting to field at major airports. Instead of metal, they detect dense objects, which WILL catch plastic knives and the like. I think these are different from ones that Munk described (soft xrays).

Don't know who has them, and I sure wouldn't want to be caught with one of those plastic knives/daggers. Never saw much use in them anyways, I much prefer 5160.... ;)

Has anyone stopped to imagine the impact this is going to have on the medical community? They will loose millions of $'s a year.
No one will ever have to pay for a mamogram, Xray, or MRI again.
All we'll have to do is go to the airport.

"Uh, Madam, we're pleased to be able to confirm you don't have any weapons on you, but there's a nasty looking growth under your left breast you'd better have checked."

more like..."Sir, did you know you have kidney stones?" or..."Bill, come take a look at this prostate." :D :D

are easy to defend against if you have a seat cushion in front of you.

STEWARDESS: ...exits above the wings. Your seat cushion doubles as a personal flotation device and box cutter (plastic knife?) shield..."

Seriously though, the answer seems to be "yeah when we get the new model X scanners...." But I was kind of wondering about right now.

Don't think that they've abandoned the idea of using planes just because the doors are barred to the cockpit. And these knives seem very capable of cutting a throat and definitely capable of stabbing.

As most of you know I am NOT in favor of banning objects. Not my intent here. I just wish the U.S. Gov would take this Sh*T seriously and spend the money to get security to where it SHOULD be:grumpy:

Just recently reporters from a major newspaper smuggled various weapons onto planes--(including handguns IIRC)and were only detected in 30% of the security checks. Not positive about my percentages, but it was a high % that got weapons onto the planes. If you can get small arms on, you can get small bombs on too...

Americans need to change the way we do things. here's the pattern as I see it: 1)event happens 2)big uproar and securtity crackdown 3)within one year or less the public starts to forget and pretend that the threat is gone. "I mean, hey! its been like a year and nothings happened so...." Stupid!

They STILL don't have the technology in place in our major airports to check all our checked baggage--you know, the stuff that rides under your ass when you fly through the air! LESS than 10% gets checked folks!! You don't think Osama watches CNN? Think again.

I guess here's my bottom line: everybody's always chanting "NEVER FORGET 9/11!" and I agree! But that slogan DOES NOT only mean "don't forget the fallen" it ALSO means "Don't forget to PREVENT and PROTECT" against another disaster.

If CCW carriers were allowed armed on planes there would be no further hijackings.

Show the paperwork at the door and purchase and load approved ammo.

I'm not convinced it should just be CCW carriers either...

MauiRob, you make a good point. This country tends to be far too complacent, and unwilling to do what it takes to deal with the threat - like grow a spine.

I like Munk's idea of allowing CCW holders. Just have the airlines carry the proper ammo (probably frangible (sp?)) and issue it at the gate.

"Good morning, Sir. May I see your boarding pass? What caliber would you like today? 45? Here are your 7 rounds, Gate A36, please."

My idea is a little more extreme. I think the airlines ought to modify their planes. Make the area from the cockpit door extending on back about 8 feet the "death zone". Put a ring of light armor such as Kevlar radially around the circumference of this zone, and have some sort of projectile weapons around the circumference also - think of small claymores, controlled from the cockpit. When a hijacking occurs, the pilot/copilot keeps an eye on things via camera, peep hole, whatever, and whenever said terrorists enter the "zone", they push the big red button, bye bye terrorist. Talk about getting in the zone!

why not have the cockpit detachable and able to fly on it's own? Just leave the terrorists, and passengers, to fall to their deaths. About as good as shooting them out of the sky rather than allowing armed pilots.

I think that's the crux of the matter, and that's a really good way to put it. If we didn't have all the idiotic (and unconstitutional) restrictions, this wouldn't be a problem any more. But it requires a spine on the part of society. Hard to do while watching Oprah...

...watching Ophra and eating chocolate bon-bons

You're right. We wouldn't be in this position had we not surrendered our responsibilities. Now that we are in this position, naturally, only more restrictions can work, right?

Never thought I'd live to see an entire earth held hostage by terror and most of that earth complaining the US is too harsh on terror.

The knives don't xray. I carried a composite dagger and punch dagger thru security. Don't know what the new fangled detection devices will do.

I like the idea of the flying cockpit -- or maybe you could rig a parachute to cockpit only, punch out and just let the rest of the plane fly to hell.
