I'd written John about shooting the calf the other day, and how I felt about it. I just got this note in response to that email, and one I'd sent him about the knife, Sarge, and the response.
Slightly edited, here it is:
"Thanks for the note!!~as always, enjoyed much..and, yes, did get the one about the knife made outta the file..not only did I enjoy, but my wife Cindi was sitting here as I read it..so she got to enjoy it also<smilez>and..as for the killing of anminals..knows exactly what ya sayin the also pard..for yrs..when younger..hunted alot..that..and also just shot alot of critters that I flat didnt need too..like birds and such?/In fact, it started getting to me so much..that the last 4-5 yrs that my good pard and I went deer hunting..we kinda fell into a rutine of going out nice and early..before light..like good lil hunters..and then finding a nice grassy high hillside to lay donw on..and then watched the deer prance around and jump the fences and such..just never do seem to get tired of watching a deer jump a fence??for some reason find it beeutifull, how easy and gracefully they do it?/..Then, we would go back into town around late morn, and eat a big ol greasy spoon breakfast, Then go back out and lay on a hillside again in the afternoon and watch the deer somemore..still carried rifles for some reason??but, the last theing either one of us would of wanted to do would have been to have gotten a deer??thinks it was just the enjoyment of watchin umm or sumthin more than anything..that..and, was just like I had kinda killed my quota of critters by then..when there was really no need..what with being able to run down to the local grocery, and getting just the cuts that were wanted?/..still..havent hunted for yrs..but..the kid and I shoot up a hell of a lot of paper will tell ya!! lafffs..In fact, have found it a very good disiplne for the both of us..and, being 16, thinks it does the son a lot of good,, so have been doin and awfull lot of it lately..we mostley shoot 22 target pistol, the son and I bought a really nice competition quality Walther-Smith and Wesson, target pistol, with the long barrel and compensator and alla the fancy jazz..that and I have a full bore National Match Hard Chromed Colt 45 thats had alla the fancy jazz done to it..and..along with that, here lately..like a week ago..we went and became members of a local new fancy gun range they recently built near us here..so that we could get into some serious long rang rifle stuff..just nuthing quite like reaching out there to 800-1000 yrds..and actully putting a few where ya trying too..get a kick out of friends ..or just peeps quackin..who talk about hitting a such and such out there at 700 yrds. +..with say there 30-06..or there 308..and when ya ask umm if they held 20-30 ft over the critter..is like they dont understand..that theres at least that much bullet drop at that range..get some good laffs over that..rite now we,re using a 264 win magnum..a damn nice long range shooting iron..but..getting ready to order a 6-24 power scope for it..as at 800 yrds..the 4 power we,re using now covers the whole target with the reticle at that range!!llol..ahhh..also, dont remmeber if I told ya or not??the ol memory ya know??but..them damn chemo treatments they been having me doing..and that have just been tearing me up something feirce for what They..and I thought was for really prolly almost nuthing..other than to make it maybee a lil easier at the end here to breath..and..just maybee..maybee..might add a very lil extra time..tho they were very plaain on telling me that there was no way that it could do any curing..well..had some tests done a few weeks ago..and danged..if that chemo hadnt blown some holes into a whole bunch of them tumors??and..there were only about 4 new lil ones that they could see??soooo..just maybee..tho there still very staunch on telling me not to get my hopes up..at least it looks like if nuthin else..might just slow that crap down a tad bit..which..will tell ya what..is really as much or more than I coulda hoped for..so praise the Lord there!!~at least a lil good news in one of my days!!<grinzz>..tho will tell y a what!!all of them are good..<<some just a lil better than others>><<smilezz>as always..enjoyed yer note much..and knows I rambled off a whole bunch on the return..but hell..enjoy quackin with ya pard..even if only like this!!~sooo..ya gets any extra time..knows tha I always enjoy hearing from ya!!~Wishing you the best in All ..John"
He just plain makes me smile. There is a spirit in some folks that makes others feel better about life, even at the hardest times. People like that are a gift in life.
