OT: Another plane crash

It sounds like they had to fish the vertical stabalizer (the big fin on the tail) out of Jamaica Bay. That must have been quite a mechanical failure. They also had to dive down to get the data recorder. Then there are all the reports of an explosion and the near vertical impact of the fusilage on Rockaway Beach.

This is either the freakiest accident avaiation has ever had, or the plane ran into a flying duck the size of a DC-3. If it genuinely was an accident then we should ground the entire AIRBUS A300 fleet until they can be retrofited to correct the problem. I don't see that happening becuase this was no accident.

My condolances to the families and friends and those affected by this horrific event. I still can not believe it myself.

I got this information from the BBC website:

Early warnings

There have been documented malfunctions involving General Electric's CF6 engines - the same model as that of the American Airlines flight - in the past.

Just last month, the FAA called for tougher inspections of possibly worn parts, saying they constituted an "unsafe condition" that could damage an airplane.

The FAA set a 60-day period for industry feedback, which was to end on 4 December.

The NTSB had also warned that failure of these engines during flight could send hot metal fragments tearing through important control systems or fuel lines, and could cause a plane to crash.

The American Airlines plane had gone through routine maintenance tests overnight on Sunday, and investigators were checking who had access to it during those hours.

The horrible thing about this was the wreckage hit a neighborhood that is mostly populated by firemen and police officers who have been dealing with the WTC... and lost a lot of lives in it.

I sat through this afternoon's news briefing (working for a paper now) and thought how horrible can it get for those folks! Add them all to your prayer lists.. they could use all the help they can get.

The Big Apple sure has had its share of bites taken out of it in the last couple of months. I certainly feel for them.
