8-Year-Old Hunter Bags Bear in Md.

OAKLAND, Md. (AP) - An 8-year-old girl killed the first black bear of Maryland's 2005 hunting season, downing the 211-pound adult male with two shots from a .243-caliber rifle about an hour after dawn Monday, the Department of Natural Resources said.

Sierra Stiles was hunting on her family's farm in southern Garrett County, said Paul Peditto, director of the agency's Wildlife and Heritage Division.

Maryland law sets no minimum age limit for hunters, but first-timers must pass a course and show that they can safely handle and shoot a firearm. Sierra scored 98 percent on her safety test, Peditto said.

Six bears were registered by 5 p.m. Monday. State wildlife managers set a quota of 40 to 55 bears for the hunt, which runs through Saturday.

Man talk about being just old enough to keep both ends off the ground . I,m a city slicker and can,t imagine going after a bear at that age . Good for her !

Well, I doubt if she was alone...

A 200 lb bear is not very big. I've seen black bear that look like large Dogs...

But she is to be commended and respected, sure as 'shootin'
And the first with the new hunt, too!!!

Obviously an internet myth. All *true* gunners know a .243 is never enough gun for bear! :D :foot:

John, I suspect that last comment was tongue-in-cheek. 22LR's aren't large enough for humans, but plenty have died from 'em. I owned a .243 once...wrapped it up in five dollar bills and gave it away. The factory loads available back then blew up, made nasty surface wounds on hitting bone, and did not penetrate. But, if you could slide one between the ribs............

Yeah- it's not like we have evidence that it actually worked! :D

I would want a heavier, sturdier bullet for black bear than for whitetail...of course, I've heard the deer in PA tend to be larger than in the SouthEast. 6mm's a good caliber. Once I finally start having a nice cash flow in, there's a nice little 6.5x55mm Mauser I'm picking up. With the right ammunition, I reckon it'll work for anything under 1,000 lbs on this continent.

Yes, Spectre is being tongue in cheek. The 243 is a match for any 200 lb Bear ever made.

We all know the .22 is a useful and even deadly cartridge in the right hands at the right times. That it has been used for bear does not make it a good choice. An ice pick can kill a Black Bear too, but I wouldn't want to be close enough to try it.

If a .22 is all you have, and you wound the animal, what do you have now? What will you do now?
