I decided to ask those of you out there about Bali-songs for a couple reasons: I think they're somewhat elegant and I'm a little partial to them for some reasons that aren't important, and they're pretty far removed from Emerson.. the only thing attaching the two I think is the fact that Ernie's first was a Bali-song.

So, do you like them any? I personally don't carry them but I really like them for some reason. They're just simple and elegant.

I LOVE balisongs. They are quite elegant, and different. Add to that, that they are a bit intimidating, and you have an awesome knife. If you don't have any yet, get one. You'll be hooked like I am. I have a cheap one I got for a few dollars in Greece summer of '99, then I picked up a nicer Jaguar this summer, and now I'm trying to get a Benchmade. (Wish me luck! One place had an 8-month backlog!!)Anyway, balis are awesome knives. Try one, you'll love it!

Balisongs are great knives!

Recently i've had way to little time to "play" with'em though

but they are great fun and great knives.
Have a BM custom Elishewitz that i just love.

I really hope that BM could start up and do their great customs again.

Jonas,

Didn't Benchmade really screw the pooch when they just dropped the whole line? Damn. I could have cared less if they 86'd the ones with the cast handles and plastic inserts...and I gave less than a damn had they dropped the ones above them. When they dropped the ones that had the concealed pins, I was shocked.

That was a damned fine Bali-Song, especially the #44, 45 and 48 I believe. I still can't believe they just dropped them. They were excellent knives.

Now the Ti-handled one that is out now, it is a fine Bali as well...but not in the league of the others...

I will say something else now too...

Clay, over in the BaliSong Forum, is one quick Man with a Bali-Song. He had that new Ti-handled Benchmade closed in his hand in reverse grip and he drop-popped that son of a bitch so fast it would make your head spin. And I mean, there was no exaggerated or superfluous movement whatsoever. He twitched and it was open and ready to go. I don't mean a half-assed grip either, he was locked & loaded in I would imagine less than one half of one second. Maybe faster. It was blinding fast and he hardly moved.

Clay is to Butterfly Knives as Bob Munden is to Handguns and Satterwhite is to Shotguns. I'm not kidding people, the Man is Guinness Book of World Records material.

They are cool because

they swing and click and clack..
they're stronger, there's no liner lock to give way..
they're intimidating
they are a learned skill

not cool because

people have negative knife image, about as bad as an automatic..
local laws may make them illegal in different hot spots
not as fast as a combat folder
make more noise
blades are limited to stiletto type.

and by the way get the bm 42, design is best.
some of the throws will easily cut your hand, i recommend sticking to the ones where you are holding on to the safe handle...

They are not as fast...for some people.

Some people are incredible technicians with them.

Don, the Benchmade ti handled balisong is the model 42... and I have to agree with you when you say Clay is the man. If you haven't seen what this guy can do with a bali (or two balis for that matter), hop on over to his website at: www.balisongxtreme.com

I, too, love balisongs. They're great, and fun to play with. Once you get started and learn a couple of tricks, you'll be hooked.

By the way, I didn't know you could say 'bitch' on the forums

!

I saw a post in the Balisong forum about Clay making sheaths for his BM 42s.. pretty cool stuff. Inspired me to buy some concealex and a bunch of other parts earlier today. Haha, he carries dual balisongs, pretty crazy cool
smile.gif

The Vids are neat, but have you ever seen that man do it in person? Dude, the guy hardly moves...I'm not talking about a routine of openings, twirls and spins, closing, opening...he does that extremely well too. I'm talking about blinding speed. The guy is very fast.

Yeow, I didn't even think anyone was paying attention.

Thanx for the praise Don, but I wouldn't consider myself a technician...... more like, a guy that doesn't know what to do with his free time.

Hi Don!
You're right 'bout BM, me too could've cared less about them plastic inserted knives, but the mod 44/45/48 style was too good to drop, of course the custom knives even nicer...
I really like the ti handled version though, i'm much faster/securer with my ti bali then i've ever been with my steel handled one's.

And of course is Clay THE man! he rocks, and is also very humble.
Good comparization to Mr. Munden

Jonas,

The idea that you could have replacement blades in the new Benchmade is very innovative. The question then becomes, will they (Benchmade) ever really do that? Offer different blade styles that will fit in the #42. Taking a look at the thread over in the BaliSong Forum, it looks like they will have their work cut out for them if they try. It looks like they are hand fitting the blades to the handles (by grinding the handles). That is not really a situation that is conducive to having a "many blades fit all handles" situation that they originally promoted the #42 as being.

So, I don't know if they are offering the blades yet, or how they work if they have. If they have not done it, they might not ever.

The design itself is very innovative. The way the latch is designed so it does not damage the point from "latch slap" was a really nice touch.

The ability to remove the latch so the owner could have a Latchless Bali was also very cool indeed. You can apparently take the thing apart, which Benchmade has been loathe to encourage people to do in the past (and present as far as I know) with their other folders.

I still think the Balis we discussed above should have never been dropped. They were wonderful knives. They were what set BM apart and tied it forever to the legacy created by PC. I wish they would bring them back, just that line as well as the Customs obviously.

I also wish that they would make a solid handled Titanium Version of the #42, not skeletonized. That would make it lighter than the steel versions, yet add a little bit of heft to the #42.

I played with Clay's #42 in Atlanta...the thing is so incredibly light, it almost felt like a toy at first (to those that have not handled one, trust me). It almost felt like plastic and you had to remind yourself it was not.

At $99.95 at my Dealer's, I cannot complain really. That is for the non-Anodized version, and hopefully I will be able to pick one up soon when I get the finances straightened out.

I think the #42, even as light and alien in feel as it is to me, will grow on me.

All in all, it is a really nice piece as a User or a Collector. I just wish they would make another version non-skeletonized and bring back the other Series. That would be very cool indeed.

There was some rumor going around about two or three years ago that Cold Steel, Inc. was going to move from California and in the process, start manufacturing Butterfly Knives, I never heard another peep about it.

Now wouldn't that be something to behold?

Can you imagine a Cold Steel Butterfly Knife? Egad, be still my beating heart. The Tri-Fold (an older version of this knife that had been around for years, my Dad used to refer to as a "Pollack Pocket Knife") is about the neatest folder CS makes now as for my tastes. I wanna see Clay risk his digits on one of them flippin' it around!
eek.gif

Seriously though, can you imagine if CS started making a skeletonized steel handled Butterfly!

How about one with that Vaquero Blade, and plain-edged without those crappy serrations that even they won't sharped for you.

CS would make a million on them in the first year.

If it was possible, a balisong would be one of my everyday carry knives. I've been playing around with them since I was around 5 years old
smile.gif
. My dad and brother are also crazy about them(well, we are Filipino). My dad has one in his collection that measures about 17 1/2" closed, 33" open. Imagine getting a kydex sheath for that and attaching it to a JSP Associate shoulder harness

.

Don, I've heard that Benchmade is planning on making a bowie blade soon for the BM42, but it could just be a rumor.

I too would like to see Cold Steel make some balisongs (butterfly knives), as well as other/more US companies... such companies I would include are Microtech and Emerson. Give Benchmade some competition. Who else is with me?

I doubt if Ernie would be interested, but if you guys flocked over to the Microtech Forum at www.knifeforums.com and dragged all of the Butterfly & Moth Sect over there from our BaliSong Forum, one of two things might happen.

1. Tony Marfione makes one of the best BaliSongs that was ever made.

2. They ban me from the Microtech Forum for inciting rioting and spam.
