OT:Be careful what you think a catelog item will be

Kis,

Care to elaborate?

Most of the knives there are O.K., or better.

Though few are as small as the typical karda, I'd say Ragweed Forge is the place to buy such items, and Ragnar there carries some of the same items.

I've been using one of the really "crackerjack toy" carbon red-handled Ericson knives as a paring knife for a couple of years. Seal up the gaps in the ferrule and end of the handle with JB weld, sand off most of the red paint on the handle and give it a few coats of oil, knock down the bevel to more of a convex shape and you've got a great knife for less than $10. And yes it looks like crap when you buy it even in a picture. But man does it take an edge and cut like hell.

I think you just picked wrong. At that price everything was put into on the looks.

And after sampling Swedish snus, I keep telling myself that I should go through the hassle of ordiering some from them instead of accepting the poor equivalent made in this country.

Sad to hear you were disappointed, especially on your bday and when you rarely treat yourself, but hopefully you saved one of os from making same mistake.

Firkin?

I'm sure that most of their stuff is wonderful. I was warning folks about that one. I love Ragnar's. I love my Moras and the Brusletto.

This was crap. Not worth going into.

I wanted a cleaver, and ordered a Chinese from a Site Yvsa found. ( not Yvsa's fault- he just tried to find sites) The cleaver arrives, looks great, sloppy handle but who cares? The edge was hard! I worked for 20 minutes and it still wasn't sharp. But I found it was slightly bent, so like a fool I sent it back. They graciously sent another plus a German steel boning knife. End of story? Of course not- this is my pathetic life. The new cleaver is not bent, but very soft, and takes 30 seconds to sharpen. As this cleaver is huge and intended for bone crushing, I really can't see holding on to it. So now I have to get ahold of Chef's Depot again and BEG for my old bent cleaver back.

Some people don't know when to leave well enough alone. I should not have believed the ad for the knife- custom made for us by Gunter in China. The operative word was China. Takes your chances and pays your money. If I ask for another who knows what will be wrong with it? And I'm 50 bucks into this process- I could end up spending 100!!

They'll probably throw in a free knife like the one Kismet got.
I hope they do good. I feel guilty- like the customer from hell. "You wanted what from CHINA? A good knife?"

I should have just ordered an SKS.

sometimes even handling a knife at a show doesn't guarantee that it will perform right when you get home....lots of deals are made on trust in the knife world right now. That's why it's so hard to cut through the hype sometimes....(no pun intended).

Well, I got lucky- I got the good cleaver back, and Chefdepot sent along some extra goodies for my trouble. Gotta hand it to them.

Pen- about Shows- even with trusted people, such as yourself, a flawed item can sometimes slip through. Your recent failure might have passed the test, but failed shortly in a customers hands. This sort of underscores what you said about this being a trust business.

a "trust based business" with a great guarantee....

kinda sounds like Himalayan Imports to me....

;)

Darn Kis, I feel bad since I started that thread and that was the knife I originally ordered and didn't get (though I am happy with the one I got).
Since it was a birthday present to yourself and didn't work out. Why not let me send you one? I have this Frosts ,with laminated steel, that is just laying around collecting dust; it's yours if you want it.

Greg

I've an old kitchen knife, Maker long since rubbed or sharpened off the surface, that I intend to restore. It is made from carbon steel and is thicker than today's kitchen knives. It's 10.5" long and the wooden, riveted handle 4.5" It used to be 3/4" wide but is now a lot less from sharpening. It may be very old.

Question, is the tang material typically hardened like the blade on this style of knife? I'm guessing Solingen or American high carbon steel. If the tang was the same as the blade I could chop the knife in two and make two trim blades.

Greg?

You are waaay too nice a man. Thank you, but no thank you. I wasn't voicing anything but a warning. The small knife you got seemed perfect. The one I ordered LOOKED really neat.

It wasn't and I was just warning folks. Northerner.com has already gotten it back and refunded the monies.

But your gesture is typical of the fine folks in the Cantina. Thank you.

What you can do, if it comes to a limited run, is order one of the Sarge knives, and give it a real workout. Deal?

:D

All my best, and thanks again.

Kis

Hi Kis,
OK, but the offer still stands (it really is just collecting dust) :)
I figured to get one of the Sarge knives if they do come about (you did real well on it).
Regards,
Greg
