Information rumored to have been posted by the California Dept of Fish and Game:

In the light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear conflicts, the California Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, fishermen or anyone enjoying wilderness areas to take extra precautions and keep alert for bears while in the field.

The use of small, noisy bells attached to clothing is advisable so as not to startle bears that can't see your approach. Also advisable is that the outdoorsman carry a good quality pepper spray with them in case an encounter with a bear is unavoidable.

It is also wise to be watchful for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear feces. Black bear feces are smaller and predominantly contain berries and vegetable material. Grizzly bear feces have little bells in them and smell like pepper:D

I wasn't aware there were any Grizzly bears in Calif. When did they get them back? Where are they- Mt Shasta?

The jingling bells has always amused me as a defense- after all, you're hiking in the wilderness to see wildlife and God and nature- not to frighten it away before you arrive.

I should have read the fine print- bells and pepper!!

If I lived anywhere near you do, munk, I'd be sending my FNFAL barrel out for reboring and rechambering from 308 Win to 358 Win. Shouldn't need any work done to the 20 or 30 round mags.

Hmmmn... wonder how much getting a spare barrel and having, oh, nevermind.
:D :D :D

Eastern Montana doesn't have Grizzly bears- I hope. Black Bears are scarce. Keep getting reports of Wolverines and Wolves.

Lots and Lots of cougars, though. Lots.
Too danm many.
They shot one out of a tree by the school house a few years ago. The big cats rumage through the dumpster. Some houses they check out- you see the tracks next morning. One lady heard her dog crying in pain, farther and farther away until the sound just disapeared over the hills.
Thats the only thing bothering me about a khuk for defense; if a cat grabs one of the boys and is halfway up a hill before I know whats happening. A revolver gives me more choices.

As for real Bear, I want my 375 back. Trouble is, Rusty, is are you going to have your reborred FN/FAL or my 375 handy when the bear attacks?
