I know this is off topic but during the recent discussion of FF D2 I was amazed at the wealth of knowledge about different steels used to make knife blades.
I have been shopping for a new folder for EDC/Duty carry. I have found many wonderful knives but unfortunately most of them are out of my price range a this time. I finally settled on one that is within my reach. I'm not sure if it would be appropriate to name the brand so for now I'll stick to the blade choices. I'm usually a fan of serrated/straight edge blades but am very picky about the configuration. My current EDC is approx 3.5 inches long and has about 1 inch of serrations from the choil forward and straight the rest of the way. I really like this arrangement. Unfortunately the knife I have my eye on is half and half so I have decided to go with a straight edge only knife.
The knife is available with blades made from either 154CM or D2 Tool. What are the advantages/disadvantages of each? This will be a hard use knife exposed to all kinds of weather and environmental conditions. Besides my day job I do Search and Rescue work and will become an EMT in the near future. Any advice, knowledge and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Mods please forgive this off topic thread. I'm posting it here because of the knowledge, expertise and politeness of the Hogs on this forum. Also compared to some of the other sub-forums this one is BS free when it comes to advice.
