I finished this one up Thursday, and I wanted to share it:

bowie1.JPG

Its triple edge quenched O1, fully convexed, 416 stainless guard, desert ironwood burl handle on a full tang, with 11 mosaic pins. The finish in the picture is 800 grit, but right now its a higher, polished satin. 12' overall.

I was inspired to make this by the Bark River Rogue and Bill Bagwell's Hells Belle. I like to think of it as a mesh between the two. It actually fits into the Rogues sheath.

You can see from the picture that the guard needs to be cleaned up more. Fortunately, I dont think that will take more than a few minutes of work. You can also see a little spot between the first two pins that comes out a little farther than the rest of the handle, causing a bend in the reflection along the top. I already fixed that with some sandpaper.

This one got really sharp. Its been tested on pop cans and a whole lot of cardboard and its stayed sharp so far. It holds a great edge thanks to Khukuri_Monster's excellent heat treat.

Thanks for looking.

That's a great looking knife, JS.

Sigh. Someday, I'll get off my donkey and actually try making a knife.

Dayum!!!! Jeb is that Actual Size?!?!?!? ;) That IS a Really, really, nice Bowie and a man always has too love that Desert Ironwood! :D
And a Dayumed Nice Job You Did!!!!

Personally I Love 0-1 tool steel! :D
Methinks it isn't rated high enough often enough since the advent of the newer High Speed steels.:grumpy:
Yea, it can rust like hell but that depends on how it is kept. I have an 0-1 steel handmade knife laying next to me that has been there for some time.
I use it for opening packages and the occasional carpet cutting job.
After using it for a nasty job like cutting carpet I re-sharpen it, wipe it off with a lotion filled Puff, you, the kind that's not s'possed to hurt yer nose, and it hasn't shown one iota of rust yet.

Beautiful piece of work JS :D  I love it!! You seem to have some darn good skills there bud! I hope we get to see more of your work.

Gorgeous work! I love that handle. I have a desert ironwood handle on one knife, but it doesn't have those sharp looking pins or the coffin handle.

Jeb, I briefly had a JS Frontier Bowie sold by Buddy S. on the Sale forum. Scrolled guard and buttcap, about an 8" blade. Kind of a modified Randall type border patrol handle in some exotic wood. Very nice western style sheath with a buckle. Was that your work also?

You should definitely change your classification from "Registered User" to "Knifemaker!"

Regards,

Norm

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Yvsa, no it isnt the actual size, although it would be intereting to have one that big. This ones only 12" overall. O1 is a nice steel. Its easy to heat treat, and a good heat treat on O1 will beat a poor heat treat on 52100. And you might consider the lack of rust resistance as a bonus in regards to etching and patinas. Not to mention the stuff grinds like butter. But, I did just buy a lot of 52100, so that is what I'll be using for a while. Im actually starting to regret the switch.

Svashtar, that definately wasnt my bowie. This is my first bowie, and only my third finished knife. I wouldnt change to knifemaker status yet, because I dont consider myself one. Maybe after I start heat treating myself, but I need to make a forge first. I would like to start selling some knives this summer.

Excellent work, Jeb:) Keep us posted. I'm sure you'll find more than one potential customer in the cantina. That coffin handle looks mighty comfy.

Beautiful work Jeb. We will be looking forward to more of your knives. You have great talent.

I agree with everyone else - Beautiful knife. Desert Ironwood is one of my favorite handle materials. Always looks great.

Thanks for the post.

Simply put = That knife looks dang good, Jeb.

Third knife, whatever....doesn't matter. If you got it, you got it.

What flavor is it?

And is it cursed?

The flavor is brown. Unfortunately it is cursed. However, I'll throw in a six pack of carbonated holy water for no extra charge.

I need a kleenex.
