Hello all, was wondering if anyone collects coins?
I just found a bunch of US mint Packs and a
couple of US mint display sets. I am not a coin man
and was wondering if these were worth any more then
whats inside the packs?(pics will follow, my wife stole the camera:grumpy: )
anyway they dont seem special they are just sealed packs.
But I dont know why they would package them up?
If anyone knows anything about them let me
know.........Thanks

I do I do!

All should be worth more than face value. Value depends on the date, the condition of the coins, and if there are any errors.

Just to clarify - a mint set is a set of business strikes. These are coins that are just like the regular ones intended to circulate but they tend to be nicer with fewer handling marks.

A proof set is a set of coins with a special finish, different from business strikes.

If you find a coin in nice enough condition, it may be worth far more than the whole set. Hundreds of dollars or more in fact. Don't expect to find a coin like this though. They sell for a lot of money because they're rare.

Some old mint and proof sets can be fairly valuable as an original, complete set. This is because a lot were broken up to submit the nicer coins to grading services.

I'm not sure what you mean by packaged. Some of the newer sets come in hard plastic. The older ones may be cellophane in a paper envelope. Even older sets will include coins wrapped in tissue paper.

I'd like to see the pics. I'd suggest going over to the Collectors Universe Forums and reading a lot and asking questions. Learn to grade, learn how to tell if you have cameo or deep cameo coins.

not a photo man either but here they are.

and others.

Thanks Ryan8 the pics are not very good but may give you an idea.

Some of we numismatists are purists & aren't turned on by clad coins or new era commemoratives.
Any library should have a coin value book. Don't accept book value as worth though. Dealers will pay you considerably less . You must find another collector to get a better price.
Most towns have coin clubs that are open to the public. Members usually are enthusiastic help to newbies.

Thanks UA,

I dont plan on following this hobby, just found them and
knew I would find someone here to help me with these.
more then likely they will be traded off or sold as I have
too many.

Year, mint mark, and how many minted will make a difference on value also.

They are great to give to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc.

I don't think it's possible to have too many.. :)

Very true. I'm seeing mostly Ike-era and later, which runs about $10-20. Start talking pre-64, and you've some $.

I've a full set of proof sets from 1959, built one at a time. It's pretty cool. :D
