I just got back from Hiawassee Wildnerness Area in Tennessee, to see the Crane migration. They have a hangout spot in Tennessee there, with 13,000 Sandhill Cranes at one time! And a few big Whooper Cranes that come through too. There were a few eagles and a beautiful great blue heron.
The sounds were incredible, thousands of Sandhill Cranes calling.. I wish I were back there now. I read about 50,000 Sandhill Cranes migrate through that route and stopover in TN.
The other best part of the trip was a little Cherokee Indian Heritage festival and "Cranefest" at a local elementary school. This was a real small rural area, everyone was friendly. I was walking through the festival and found one Cherokee lady sitting there with some things for sale. I walked up to her and started talking Cherokee and she almost fell off her chair, literally! We had a good time.
