I just got an estimate of $14,000.00 from my dentist for some work I need. Over the last twenty years I have already bought this clown two BMWs and a Mercedes and even if I could afford it, I wouldn't pay that rip-off price.
So, I'm thinking of having the work done in Mexico or the Philippines. Even with the added cost of flying and lodging, I will still end up paying a fraction of what it would cost here.
For example, my dentist charges about $800.00 for a crown. Mexican dentists who work on Gringos charge about $250.00. In the Philippines they range from about $60.00 to $125.00. I need eleven of them plus an upper bridge and a new lower partial.
One option would be to drive my camper down to San Diego, live in a campground for a couple of weeks and take the bus across to TJ to get the work done. Gas, rent, and food would probably come to less than $800.00.
The next cheapest, and most appealing to me, would be to fly down to Mazatlan, rent a cheap apartment out of the tourista zone and live on the economy. I like this idea because Mazatlan is a beautiful place on the ocean and I could work in a couple of fishing trips. Transportation, rent, and food would probably run about $1200.00.
The Philippines has the best dental work prices, but the flight costs about $1500.00 and I don't know how comfortable I would feel living on the economy there since I don't know a word of Tagalog. My landlord is from there so I'll see what he has to say.
Anyone have experience with any of this?
