Looks like that means that I send them my bank account number. Aside from the fact that I HATE having any financial information "out there" in the web world, what vulnerabilities does this "verification" entail?

Thanks.

Kis

I think it depends on what kind of account you get.

The verification thing is for an account that dips straight into your bank account.

I used a kredit kard and there wasn't a verification when I signed up.

I think this is true but it's been a coupla years since I signed up for da payepawl

oops... I thought you said paypal. :footinmou
I don't gots an e-bay account.

not mine.

Actually, Bruise...

What you thought is what I meant.

PayPal keeps asking me to get verified. I signed up in 2001. Apparently there is a life-time spending limit on the PayPal account.

I have zero balance, but over the years I've used the account because it eliminates hassles.

Until this verification thingie. :(

I can't get verified because SHMBO used our account number for *herself*!

No harm, no foul...it just limits your spending (or is it receiving)?

This is why I stay away from Paypal too;
An old friend just found me again- that is good.

How? He used a search engine which had data about my family, birthdates, names of children, etc; all because someone with my last name did a family tree search. This is very bad.

MY wife once had her identity stolen- briefly- and with only some real pia hassle, but now we have a few extra security measures in place for credit institutions.

easy to get verified. Give them your bank acct info, they make 2 deposits (under 0.50 ea.) and then you come back to paypal and type in the amounts. It increases your daily limit - which is way over anything I'd ever charge. Also, if you run into a seller that doesn't accept CC payments via paypal, then the bank acct route is the only way you can use paypal.

Has its benefits, I s'pose. I've done it with 3 diff. bank accts. now....so far so good.

And Nasty, I'm hoping that what you meant to put down was

SWMBO - She Who Must Be Obeyed

and not

SHMBO - She HO Must Be Obeyed

holy toledo!!!

Danger! I have never heard of any legitimate online vendor who needed bank account numbers. Credit cards, OK - but anything else...? No way!
Identity thieves might want those numbers. Why would anyone else?
I started getting "security warning" e-mails allegedly from Pay Pal. I contacted them and guess what? Bogus. I canceled my Pay Pal account right away. It's scary out there.

Seems I've heard of this or something similar happening too.
There was a write up about this or similar in the Good Bad Ugly Forum some time back IIRC.
It might behoove anyone interested to do a search there about PayPal. I have never had a PayPal account and probably never will because of the stories I've read about their problems.

I have used PayPal since it came online. I have done thousands of dollars worth of business, both buying and selling, without a problem. The verification process insures that your address matches the bank records. That way nobody can hijack your eBay account and make purchases that get charged to your PayPal account.

The down side is that you are giving PayPal access to your bank account and they could withdraw funds that you don't specifically authorize such as to settle a dispute. I have never heard of this actually happening, but it is a concern for many folks.

Also, the more info you put out there, the more likely are the chances for it to be misused, but in my experience with banks and credit card companies, they have always taken care of any problems that came up and I never lost any money.

I haven't had any problems with PayPal or eBay, but a while ago someone charged about a thousand dollars worth of bank cash transfers to one of my credit cards. The credit card company took care of it, and immediately launched an investigation which I think eventually caught the guy. It was a little bit of a hassle for me, but not too much. All I had to do was file a couple of reports and change the numbers on my credit cards.

Every so often I get a call from the fraud department of my main credit card company to verify charges. Last week they called because all of a sudden charges started appearing from Indiana. It was just my wife who was visiting my daughter, but I really appreciate them being on top of things.

Everyone probably knows this, but never respond to emails from PayPal or eBay requesting information. If you want to change or verify info on your accounts, go directly to the home site and do it there.

Those eMails saying there is a problem with your account and you need to submit data are just scams trying to harvest your vital info to rip you off. PayPal or eBay never send these types of messages.

Anytime you use anything but cash, there is some possibility of identity theft. That being said, I've been using Paypal to decimate  my checking account for a couple of years with no problems. It's linked to my checking account and the money comes from there if theres none in the paypal account. You can set up other funding sources like credit cards as well.

If you think of it, everytime you write a check, several people along the way see your checking account number. I'm not trying to talk you into verifying your paypal account, cause sure as I did, you'd have problems. :footinmou

As far as "spoofed" emails, I've gotten them from Paypal, Ebay, and Citibank, and I don't even bank with Citibank. Never respond to an email asking for personal info. Those emails looked very real and official.

Steve

Give me the good old days when people just knocked you in the head and took your cash. ;)

I'm sure we can arrange something like that. Are you going to the next khonvention? :D

This just in from Jessica at PayPal:

"Thank you for contacting PayPal. We apologize for the delay in
responding to your service request.

PayPal's security process requires members to become Verified before
sending more than the initial $2000 Sending Limit which is granted at
the time you add your credit card and complete the Expanded Use
Process, if necessary.

· The $2,000 sending limit is not a per-transaction limit. It is
over the lifetime of your account, until your account becomes verified

Your History Log has a record of every payment sent/received over the
lifetime of your account. Please review it to ensure no fraud has
occurred."

So...as I understand it, after 3 years of using PayPal and not having a problem, or...using the service for up to $2,000 of payments...THEN you have to have a credit back-up?

counterintuitive.

Getting verified with a bank account is easy.

I opened a separate bank account (the free type with no minimum balance). And tied that account to paypal. When I do transactions, I transfer to or from that separate account to cover paypal. Always leaving very few dollars in the account. If I have money in my paypal account, I transfer it to that separate bank account and then to other accounts. There is nothing to steal if the separate account gets compromised. I have not had a problem with it.

As Ben said, always do your transactions directly on the paypal or ebay site. Never by clicking links in an email you may have received.

I do the same, Semp.

Kis - millions of people use Paypal every day. It's safe. Like Semp said, it's very easy to get verified. You've been enjoying the benefits of Paypal for a long time - have you had any troubles/fraud?
