"In this Cannes Film Festival award winner, two Inuit brothers (Amaqjuaq, the Strong One, and Atanarjuat, the Fast Runner) struggle to save their nomadic tribe from evil. Atanarjuat romances the beautiful Atuat, much to the chagrin of the arrogant son of the tribe leader, Oki, who won't stand for the humiliation. Oki stages an ambush in which Amaqjuaq is killed, but Atanarjuat miraculously escapes."

This movie is made entirely with Inuits. None of them are movie actors. It is really worth seeing. And there are some knives in it too :)

The Independent film channel showed a Samurai film, made in 64, that I caught half of today and thoroughly enjoyed. Can any of you film buffs tell me what it's name was? It is about a blind Samuria who is falsely accused of stealing the tax collection from a small community. Mifune was not in it.

It really stood out. They'll probably run it tomorow or later tonight too.

If it's about a blind samurai then it's got to be about the character "Zatoichi", the famous blind samurai/masseur.

There were literally dozens of Zatoichi films made in the 60's and 70's.
There's a recent Zatoichi movie dating from 2003 with Takeshi Kitano.
Very amusing, if you like samurai flicks.

That Inuit movie sounds interesting, I'm gonna keep an eye out for it.

PS
The movie you partly watched was; Zatoichi and the chest of gold

As mentioned, that movie was discussed before.
But I am glad it was brought back up, because it's only movie of it's kind.
If you can check it out, do it. You will be a better person for it.
and you will learn a lot.

The movie is a good effort for an amateur production. The bright, high contrast photography gives a good feeling for snow. But the movie is too long for what it gives - a little mythology, a couple of killings, a rape, some hunting, a lot of eating of raw frozen seal fat, and a lot of very unattractive individuals standing around doing nothing.

Having them all speak Eskimo didn't add a thing. It would have been better in English.

I loved Fast Runner. It was a traditional Inuit slice of life movie. A wonderful and magical few hours of a world that I'll never know anything about firsthand.

Nobody will ever know anything about it firsthand. The story takes place about 300 years ago.
