This happened this morning to a good friend and training buddy of mine (and owner of an HI sirupati! ). My friend is about 5'10" and thin, but very fit. He weighs about 150, and has been a martial artist in the Buj and Jinenkan for perhaps 8 years.

had a very interesting start to the day today. They say it can happen to anyone. Now I know it's true.

It's 8:55am and I'm crossing the busy intersection of Capitol Ave. and Memorial Dr. and suddenly, out of nowhere, this guy crossing the other way clotheslines me trying to knock me down. He is unsuccessful so he tries to choke me with one arm while trying to get my backpack and into my pockets with the other. I had turned into him to avoid the tackle and this also nullified the choke however he still had hold of me and was jerking and pulling on me while trying to get my backpack. While my right arm was busy holding on to my pack I managed to ram a left thumb into his crotch area. I must of hit something because he let go.

At this point I let loose a string of explicatives that would make a sailor blush. I had made eye contact now and finally had the presence of mind to try ready myself for another attack. I backed away and squared off with him. He just kept looking at me, breathing very heavy, and w alking backwards. He finally turned around and ran off.

Keep in mind this all happened in the middle of the street with people and cars everywhere. I was crossing the street and thinking about what I had to get finished at work today and the attack came out of nowhere. I was caught completely by surprise. The good thing is I didn't freak or anything. I was actually relatively calm. The struggle probably lasted about 8-10 seconds and during that time I really wasn't thinking at all. It wasn't until we separated that I realized what was going on and was able to
mentally and physically prepare myself. Another interesting thing is that although we were in the middle of the street I was only partially aware of the cars and stuff around me. It was like we were in a bubble or something. The only thing I could clearly focus on was him.

The guy was my height and chubby, p robably weighed around 180 or so. He looked and acted like he was strung out on something. I just happened to be in the right place at the wrong time. If nothing else I've now got a good story to tell.

This is a great guy and buyu, and I'll count his lack of harm one of my blessings this Christmas!

Perhapse the right place at the right time, after all, imagine if it had been someone without the presence of mind to cope. Actually something similar happened to a mate of mine, only in a dark field, he was clotheslined but could do nothing being considerably smaller than his two attackers, he fell and curled into a ball, they gave him a bit of a kicking before running off. They didn't take anything or touch his girlfriend who was standing nearby.

I am glad to hear your friend was ok, hope it doesn't happen again.

He was lucky. And skilled- a good clothesline could've hurt him, or if the guy had used a knife...

It'll probably just remind him to keep zanshin. :)

Wow! you have to expect the un-expected?

I'll try to be more aware of my surroundings, glad to hear it ended ok.;)

The unfortunate part of this kind of thing is that it is getting worse all the time instead of better. The advise to be aware is good for all to follow. Trouble comes when we least expect it.:)

You need to fight back whether it is a Mountain Lion, Bear, or Human.

Or a doctor or nurse, for that matter.

Their negligence or indifference can kill you and then they'll lay off the blame on your excercise and eating habits or God's will!

Yeah Rusty; I know the stats: up to 100,000 deaths a year blamed on medical mistakes. We had a miscarriage after the magic first trimester because the hospital doing her general health was not linked to the sub group doing her baby stuff. A prescription unknown to the Baby Docs, given by the larger office, killed the fetus.

So you could say paper work was a Killer. Or computers. Or the wrong coordinates heard on phone to the cannon. Friendly fire.
