sorry, but i am just at the end of my rope here. i have neighbors that moved in a year ago and they have three chihuahuas. those dogs have woke me up in the morning and kept me up at nights(6a-7am in the morn, 11p-1a at night, sometimes later) for the whole time they have been here. i have asked the neighbors to keep them quite, but they seem not to care. these same neighbors, by the way, also always park right in front of my house because they own about 7 damn cars. they live 3-4 families in that one house by the way. anyways, back to the dogs. i cannot keep my windows open any longer because they are constantly barking, and they literally bark at the wind and sometimes nothing. having a bbq, or playing catch in the backyard is no longer possible, because they will bark like someone is trying to break in to their yard. i am really pissed off at the people, because i know it's in a dog's nature to bark, but what can i do? what kind of legal recourse can i take to keep those dogs quite? i live in california if that makes any difference. i have not called the cops, because i could not imagine what i would say to them. should i call the cops anyways? PLEASE HELP. seriously those damn dogs have decreased the quality of my life. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I live in CA also, and in our town, if enough neighbors complain about a noisy dog, it gets taken away. Check with your city hall and see what the rules are.

uhh....Welcome!

heckuva first post(s) - hope you get the dog thing straightened out.

Have any interest in khukuris?

As stated, the KK makes a good sticker....

Hey boots,
I don't live in CA, but we have had dog trouble in our neighborhood, too. Folks across the street had dogs that would bark 24/7 when they were gone. They took 3-day weekends away all summer, and left the dogs home to bark all weekend. Several neighbors had asked them if they could do something about it, but the request fell on deaf ears.
While working in my front yard one day, I saw another neighbor go to the back yard where the dogs were barking. The guy just snapped; he just went crazy, yelling "shut up!" at the dogs. Then he started throwing rocks and sticks at them and yelling more. It just made the dogs bark more. I have to admit that, although I knew he shouldn't have been doing that, I was inwardly cheering him on. We had all had enough. When the people got home, they found that one of the dogs had a cut on his face; and a neighborhood kid saw what happened, too, and told on the guy. They ended up going to court over this. Guess my point is to keep your cool as you try to work through this with your inconsiderate neighbors.
Someone did eventually call the police (several of us actually) and got some relief. They had to witness the dogs barking, which they did. They were required to make the dogs stop barking and required that the dogs wear a special shock collar to train them to stop barking. It worked, too.
I would call the police (non-emergency number, of course) and just ask them what you can do. Just explain the situation and they should be able to tell you if there's anything you can do, as if so, what.
Good luck. I know it's a frustrating situation.

Aren't there members that bisect dogs (along either axis) or did I dream that?

i have been lurking for nearly three years here, and although you guys are not familiar with me, i have read many a post in this particular forum. i do have an interest in knives, khukuries especially, and have many HI products. ang khola 16.5", 15" sirupati, 20" sirupati, 25" kobra, 20" kobra. actually, compared to you guys, 5 isn't that "many". :)

Not sure if this is State or County, but I recall from living in So Ca that if a dog barks for more than 5 minutes at a time past curfew you can have the neighbor cited.

Call city hall and find out.

Yes....5 is considered a "start-up" collection.....:D

Most areas have nuisance laws that should take care of that. If you live in a deed restricted neighborhood you may get some help there (although I have no love for "community associatons")

I've had much the same problems. Our next door neighbor got sick, had family come down to take care of her, then she died and they stayed. And their dogs.

I'm feeling bad about it because it felt so good to see in last week's newspaper that the place was going up for auction at the end of the month for 17K in back payments and taxes.

But I honestly did want to shout about it at the top of my lungs that they'd be gone in less than a month. It's been over 3 years I think.

they make "invisible barriers" for dogs that emit a high pitch noise that can only be heard within a few yards of the source. A row of these makes for a good "fence". I wonder if you couldn't buy a few and put them along side your fence....at least it'll keep 'em distant.

My brother was working 12 hour night shifts and neighbours had a big mutt that barked the whole time they were out during the day. They were less than helpful and sympathetic when he explained the problem and that he was getting sleep-deprived.
To cut the story short, he ended up feeding the miserable brute a complete bar of a well-known laxative chocolate through the letterbox. When the owners got home, the dog had 'decorated' a lot of the house from about tail level downwards in an all-too-familiar brown colour. After that, they were pretty cautious about leaving the dog for any length of time.

Not sure what it might do to chihuahuas; probably turn them inside out, but might shut them up while they concentrated on more pressing matters.

Shoulda bought the house, Rusty.

I like the part about coming to help and then staying.

That's funny!!

Boots, I had the same problem. 4 families to the house (wonder how a low to low-mid income mexican family in Salinas can afford a $600K house? Just go 6 or 7 ways and 20 people live and party in "their" house.) Hey, whatever works, but can't you at least keep it to 2 cars in the garage, 4 on the driveway, 3 in front of the house, 3-4 more cars across the street, _without_ parking 2 or 3 more in my driveway? Their parties were the worst, with 50 to 75 people showing up, parking in and across my driveway AND lawn, leaking oil on everything. If their kids had to take a pee, they would just do it in the street or against the side of my house. Baby diapers need changing? No problem, just drop the dirty diapers in the street along with the beer cans so cars can drive over it later, or throw it in our flower garden. Of course, to pee on our property you might have to stagger through the landscaping and kick over a few solar ground lights and shatter them, but hey, I'm not gonna pee over at MY house! Infuriating.

The guy who had the house in his name really was a nice guy and was in the service, but was gone most of the time and had just zero control over the home. He had a beautiful purebred english bulldog who barked and barked and barked for one simple reason, he was cold. They would never let him into the house though and he literally slept in the mud. He couldn't sleep of course and wanted to be let in, so he barked. At 3 or 4 in the morning when we couldn't take it anymore, we would walk over and wake them up and they would let him into the warm garage and the barking would stop.

After calling the cops 10 or 12 times, I finally got smart and called the SPCA and said that the dog was being abused. (Which he was; I'm sorry but anybody who keeps a dog outside unsheltered 24/7 is abusive.) They investigated and told the family to either let the dog into the garage or other sheltered area at night or they would take him away. Rather than comply the family just turned the dog over to the pound. Jerks. In any case the barking finally stopped after more than a solid year.

I have to tell you before it did though there was more than one time I was tempted to stop the barking no matter _what_ method it took!

Regards,

Norm
