This is from a magazine called Natural NewEngland Spring 2002 issue:

Bald Eagle saw a meal in pet dog

"Laura and Jon Martin of Madison Maine can attest to the lifting power of a bald eagle. Their 13 lb dog survived an attack in March, and only lived to whine about it after biting the eagle's leg and being dropped from tree-top height."

"Ava (the dog) with deep talon punctures and injured rear legs, was reported recovering after treatment."

My German Shepherd is not too worried about it, but I'd keep an eye on those chihuahuas!!

Rob, are there still acid rain problems in Maine? I wonder if the eagles are getting a little hungry without fish in the lakes...they can have the chihuahuas ;)

Matt

Eagles can pick up a lot more than a 13 pound dog. Baby sheep, little mountain sheep, and they can, according to the local ranchers, hary baby antelope and even new born calves to death.

Not long ago one of my Cherokee brothers passed close by my place on his way taking his mom to the Claremore ndn hospital.
About 250 - 300 yards from where I'm setting there was a big bird that had been hit by a vehicle and killed. Tsalie passed the bird by doing about 60 and his mom exclaimed, "Tsalie!!!! Did you see the size of that Bird?!?!?!?!?
Well Tsalie figured he could pick it up on the way back providing another ndn didn't stop to get it or it was a great horned owl, but that didn't happen. Someone called it in and the Federal boys of the wildlife dept came out and picked up the Eagle to send it to the Repository in Colorado.
Just his luck!!!! Probably a good thing too. I waited 3 years and 3 months to get my Eagle and have no idea of when or if I will get another one. And since I'm not going to dance in old traditional regalia one is all I need.
Besides when someone needs a feather one comes to them, I guess it's an ndn thing.:)

Edit:
I figured the distance wrong as it's about 500-600 yards since I'm not at the end of the street, still pretty damned close. Eagles would have good pickins down on the Verdigris Channel that runs from the Port of Catoosa to the Gulf of Mexico via the mighty Mississip.:)

Maybe that eagle realized that dog tacos weren't that appetizing afterall :barf: and jetisoned the pooch. ...

Actually, I've been worried about my cats (who like to roam the canyon) getting eaten by one of the hawks that hunt the canyon. My dogs watch the hawks pretty closely when we are out, but I think they're safe enough. I think the cats look too much like a bunny at 300 feet.

Anything with fur on it looks like food to an eagle, hawk or owl. The old Cairn Terrier (who had been a hobo for about six months) always hugged the side of the house, or the chain-link fence, when he was out in the yard after dark. He had two short furrows under the fur on his shoulder that might very well have come from an owl.

Trooper, the old 120 lb. Dobe, was beset by mocking birds. In true Dobe fashion, he went out every morning at 0430 and charged the cedars where they nested. Dobes have a very Cherokee sense of justice.

Yvsa, I might be able to get eagle feathers occasionally. I don't know. They're around. You don't mean the whole eagle? Well, I don't know a lot of things and ask silly questions....

You've all heard of the guy who killed the grizzly in his front yard, and how long it took to get clear of federal charges. There is another about the same time, called "the Eagle Man". In his case the feds literally punted on the case and made it stick..well, just because. He's married a local women, (at Kid Curries hideout) which is how I met him, and has written or is writing a book on the frame up. The feds almost ruined his life.

Bet you didn't know with the Government's help an Eagle could carry away a man's freedom and good name.

WARNING!!!!!

Munk whatever you or anyone else ever do DO NOT PICK UP ANY KIND OF RAPTOR FEATHERS!!!!!!!

Especially Eagle feathers!!!!
There was a lady here by one of the lakes that picked up a freshly dropped Eagle feather one day in front of one of our famous, infamous?, game wardens and she was told in no uncertain terms to throw it back on the ground NOW!!!!!!!
The verbal treatment the game warden gave that lady was most uncalled for and if it had of been my Barb he was talking too he would've felt pain no matter the cost or trouble. Some things just aren't done without consequences!!!!

I know very well how the government can mess up a life due to illegal feathers. Hell, it's against the law in some states to have bear clwas now!!!! I have one with 13 very extra large black bear claws as well as some real old very antique chevron beads made in the old way that's priceless to me and damned near nigh irreplaceable now and I have an extra large Grizz claw to add to it one of these days when I get a "round tuit.";)
A good friend of ours was up in Kansas at a reenactment and had her pheasant feather blanket laid out in front of their tent when a friend came by, picked it up and threw it into the tent telling her not to let it be seen as it would probably be confiscated as well as a very large fine for her.
And Kansas is one of the best pheasant hunting states there is with no telling how many killed each year for sport and food!!!!
Some laws are just downright outrageous!!!!

I know a Conservation Officer here in Kaintuck (they don't like "Game Warden") that would put his mother UNDER the jail for messing with any raptor. Serious stuff here.

Damn straight!!!! Like I said, "I waited 3 years and 3 months for my Eagle." and with it came the temporary permit to have it. It took another 2 years to get my permanent permit. I carry a carefully folded copy of my permit everywhere I go and there's extra copies in my dance outfit box with the feathers I keep in there.
I don't take any chances with the wildlife boys!!!!

I've heard tell of a pair of eagles in Montana hitting a deer and alternating with each other riding on it's back in deep snow 'til it was exhausted and then killing it.

Course you can hear anything just about if you listen long enough. But I wouldn't put it past them to be able to pull off something like that.

You guys have eagles and raptors; all we get down here are gators, skeeters, and Tisimi. Oh yeah, and the occasional tourist hungry shark. :)

Yea, but down thar the skeeter is the state bird and qualifies as a raptor.
They just don't have the proper feathers for a nice headdress.:)

I won't! Is this a federal deal, then? In other words, Montana Game and fish isn't what I should worry about?

Yvsa, how in God's name could picking up an eagle feather off the ground hurt anything? Oh yes, the illegal trade in feathers...not materialized? But already law enforced! Yvsa, I know for a fact many of the ndns here pick up raptor feathers off the ground to use in ceremony.

I don't suppose you need any turkey feathers? Those illegal too?

Yvsa, I just did a preliminary search of this on the State game site but couldn't come up with anything. You've scared me, and I believe you. For the record, I don't have, nor have ever had a feather of the type...but just thought as they were around....geeze..

But I know the locals pick them up.

The worse thing is i thought I could call the feds tomorow and learn a few more things..but the last time I called the BATF, for instance, I knew more about the assault weapons laws then the guy on the phone, and he was Billings best. So I can't count on any facts.

In Future America, everyone is guilty of something and can be fined and cited at any time. In future America, the books of codes outstrip the best legal scholars ability to interpret them.

Munk it's a federal deal all the way which makes it even more scary and you should be scared. I know some local ndns have picked up roadkill around here, but it's just not worth the hassle.
The pity is is that the feahters just go to waste if they're not picked up and used.
Pisses a lot of us off royally!!!!
If anyone doesn't have a permit for their feathers or other restricted items it can go very hard. Heard and read about a lady who made a dream catcher for Klinton that had an Eagle feather on it she picked up outta her yard, didn't know a thing about the federal laws and in the end wished that she had.
The government came down hard on her and her husband because he had migratory bird feathers as he was a duck hunter.
It was pure bull$hit because she made the article for Klinton and all he would've had to have done was to tell the fed boys to lay off, but he was to interested in using Monica for a cigar humidor.:(

Here's a link for you I got off of Google with an inquiry titeled Eagle permits.
