OT: Great Bowie Article

Good stuff, Jeb. I needed a chuckle.

From what I gather, there are some accurate pieces of information here:

1. There's a knifemaker called Shiva Ki.
2. There's a style of knife called a Bowie.

Not sure about the rest, though...

I still want to pit a Spirit Blade against a beer can.

Try back-cutting the cans. The back cut moves so fast, the cans will split themselves out of respect for your 1/32 second speed. Unfortunately you need to be in the Delta Force to learn to back-cut. That or watch pirates fight with their sharpened clip point cutlasses.

Yvsa - you already know how I feel about the Rose, now that she isn't out to get me anymore. She's a winner against the beer cans.

Jeb - I would try the back cut, but the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique is almost as fast and is guaranteed to be fatal. I will stick with that.

See, I keep telling everbody that my memory ain't worth a shlt.;) :D Seriously, how do you like the balance on the Rose and the design of the handle?

It is one that I almost wish I had made a Chiruwa handle on, doesn't hurt a Bowie, so the balance maybe would have been more equal.
But it would have been more difficult for the kamis too get that guard in the correct place as they seem to have trouble anyway with some of them.
It would take a little work but if a fellow were to cut off part of the wood and replace it with something heavy like copper or bronze in order too bring the balance even with the guard I think the Rose would be damned nigh perfect.:D

For a Bowie too be light in the hand it needs too balance at or very close too the guard. It makes for those 1/32nd faster than light back cuts they're talkin about.;)
Also when properly balanced it makes a 3 - 4 pound Bowie seem too weigh next too nothing.
I haven't ever had the privilige or the pleasure to hold one of Bill Bagwell's hand made Bowies but his Helle's Belle made by Ontario is impressive as hell. It is just that it is such a little knife. :grumpy:
A Bowie oughta be man sized IMO!!!! :D  ;)

Yvsa, I think some of our air has infected you from down south. You sound like a damned Texan!!!

My Rose is back in Texas and I miss it awful!!!

Guys,
I've handled a couple of Shiva's blades,I just didn't care for them.As for Bagwell,I've discussed him with Wild Bill Caldwell,I learned a few things I was unaware of,def.wasn't impressed!
THE DUCK!

He IS back among us. Run in circles, scream and shout! Repeat as needed. :p :p :D

Very neutral balance when I choke up on it, nice and "choppy" if I slip it. The handle looks too long until one puts their hand on it - then, suddenly, all is right with the world. For a knife that's essentially a short sword, it's very lively.

I sharpened up the false edge but haven't attempted a back cut yet. The beer cans are piling up - it'll happen tomorrow or Monday. I doubt that I will do it in less time than it takes to blink; I don't believe I can move my hand that fast.

While it's not part of the design, the handle's chandan - you won't hear me complaining about that either.

Looks to me like that whole thing was paraphrased out of the first two chapters of Bagwells "Bowies, Big Knives And The Best Of Battle Blades"

Not that Mr. Bagwell was at all opinionated- Just always right... :barf:

Thanks for your input Satori. I spent the better part of a year designing that handle. ;)
Lots of fellows think it's too long until the use is explained too them. You already know.:D
The Rose really does deserve a lanyard hole and a lanyard but I didn't design it as such because I was afeared that someone unskilled would use it the wrong way and hurt themselves badly.
The "Hey Y'all watch this" crowd and us knife knuts are too closely related sometimes. ;) :D

Yvsa, I've been meaning to tell you- in the July 2004 American Rifleman there is a picture of an experimental Bowie/bayonet on the military Krag rifle. The bowie/bayonet was not adopted. But it looks a lot like a smaller Rose. !!!

I always thought the most dangerous knife fighters were the guys in prison who snuck up on you and poked holes in your kidney.

It just happens that I'm selling sharpened toothbrush shivs. Just like the deadly folks in jail. 9.99 plus shipping. :)

I always liked the looks of the Krag and a small Rose on its muzzle would set it right off ainnit?;)
What was the calibre on the Krag Munk? Seems like it was one of those calibre-black powder rifle designations like the .30-30 warn't it?
A friend of mine used to have one he used as a deer rifle but that's been two years before God. :D

.30-40's the one you're thinking of. The Krag is one of those rifles that I've been wanting to shoot for years but I never got around to it.

The Rose as a bayonet? Stranger things have been done...

Edit: and who's been rating down that article in the link? I know I'm not the only one. :D

Great article, Jeb:) However the article needs ninjas. EVERYONE knows that where you find pirates, you find ninjas whoopin' they @ss;) Ok, new Cantina project fellas. We're going to build a time machine so that we can drop Danny back in 19th cent New Orleans to battle pirates and Shiva Ki with his Cherokee Rose. Who knows, maybe he'll run into a certain ex-forum troll from down around their. I'm sure HE can travel back in time too. Danny! Be sure to watch out for his hot dog bitin' dog!
Dan Koster, we're gonna need to...modify... your Nova. Bruise get some foil, some of those sharpened toothbrushes, a Light Bright, and a hot glue gun. You're in charge of building the Flux Capacitor. Great Scottt!

good God it's late. What am I doing up?

Jake
