Normandie (the liner for which the dock was built) was caught in NY harbor when France fell. The US eventually seized her to use for war purposes. She was lost when she caught fire during a refit to make her a troop transport. The fire was bad, but was brought under control by spirited fire-fighting. Unfortunately, her water-tight compartments were closed, and the huge amount of water from the fire hoses was trapped in teh superstructure--capsizing her.

In contrast with teh destruction of the Normandie Dock, the loss of Normandie is more a story of frustrating errors...
