The past few weeks I have spotted as many as three hawks in the air at the same time. They look like juvenile red-tails and one of them has taken a liking to our back yard. This may not be odd to some of you but I live in the megalopolis that is southern California. I can see the Angel stadium from work and I can hear the Disneyland fireworks from home, not normally hawk country. Crows, pigeons and gulls but not hawks. I love it, it brings a smile to my face every time I hear that cry or see him/her in our maple tree.

Hawks are not uncommon even in large cities if there are some fields where they can hunt and rodents and small animals that they can catch. I love hawks and falcons too and they always bring a smile to my face.

Hmm...maybe the hawk doesn't know they aren't on the menu? Sounds like perfect adaptaion to me.

You're blessed...

has always been crow territory. I've seen 'em mob hawks. This is the first time I've seen the hawks stick around. I do feel blessed.

Here I have an owl somplace within a block of my house that hoots all the time...odd for being in a slum city. Got plenty of Redtails, buzzards and others that I dont know what brand they are :D Crows got plenty of those, they like to snatch up walnuts that have hit the ground in my back yard, they then fly over the house with these walnuts (sometimes dropping them on top of the roof, making a nice hit sound as they roll down to the ground) to drop them in the street to wait for a car to drive over the walnut so they can get to the insides...should be happing within the month, I'll get pics...Here is a pic of a BIG BIRD that I took out at Ft Ord, only seen 1 other so far by a small town called Del Rey Oaks...the bottom pic is from the Birds of Prey who were at the Monterey Scottish games last year..The Monterey Scottish games are this weekend!

Anyone remember that scene in '12 Monkeys' ... it's winter, in NYC (or some city) and a lion is keeping tabs on everything from on top of a skyscraper .... it all has to start somewhere, why not SoCal?

There are hawks on the campus where I work. They keep the squirrel population in check. The students keep the squirrels fattened up and the hawks are loving every bit of it.
