I only really know copperheads and rattlers, so what is this guy? My bulldog found it in the back yard this morning (thankfully she didn't get bit this time) - so the BM-e got to see a little action.

I figure it'll end up in a sheath...

It's actually got a bit more yellow on the belly than what the pics show -- so the belly is pretty much yellow and red. About 2 1/2 feet long.

i assumed he was a cotton mouth, but thought different when i saw the red and yellow belly...

Whatever it is, I am surprised that you would get that close to a potentially venomous snake's head with a knife that short. Their striking distance is certainly longer than your knife. An AK-47 is one thing, but a BM??? Very chancy IMO. That said, I would be surprised if it was venomous.

More Eastern Hognose... The one you linked to looked more like a juvenile. ('Course, I'm no herp. I did date one, once upon a time. Snake girls... odd ones, let me tell ya.)

Did he "hood" at you?

Doesn't look like an eastern hognose to me:http://www.texassnakes.net/Hognose.html

Diamond backed water snake?http://www.texassnakes.net/DiamondBacked.htm

MAYBE a BroadBanded Water Snake (non-venomous) ?http://www.texassnakes.net/BroadBanded.htm

That's the one - the broadbanded water snake (we have a creek behind the house.) Well, I wouldn't have killed it if i would have known it wasn't venomous...

LOL - now I'm laughing because I thought my bulldog was getting wiser after 2 copperhead bites in the last year... She probably got bit MULTIPLE times before i got out there  Silly dog

thanks for the site John, that'll help in the future.

I'll have to post a pic of the tomahawk sheath i made for my daughter after she almost stepped on a copperhead a month or so ago -- on our driveway!

a venomous snake is nothing more "guilty" than a non venomous...
"kill the snake"-reaction is a bit more complicated phenomenom.
people kill snakes for many reasons. but IMHO better would be first to understand their behaviour, and place in the full picture, than just killing them.

...no offense intended.

...but to die for a sheath for a Busse...that's a different story;)

I feel I know Eli pretty well and would say he is as much or more of an outdoorsman than most. I'm sure he, like I, give snakes a wide berth in the outdoors. Venomous or not, they are beautiful in their element. I've even transplanted several snakes for neighbors when they're frightened or feel they are a nuisance.

That said, the element of a snake I **think** might be poisonous is NOT my backyard. Yeah, yeah... "they have a right." Whatever. I'm a 230 omnivorous mammal who will protect my offspring and pack (dog.) If I think it is poisonous, it's in my dwelling (house or yard) then it's dead snake, baby. I, too, have that right. The same goes for coyote or cougar.

I don't expect anyone that has been around here a while needs to hear this from me. Lycosa, you just might.

You're trolling in this and other forums has not gone unnoticed. Become a fruitful part of the BFC community and you'll do well. Continue "trolling" [inflammatory statements meant only to cause strife] and either do it in an appropriate forum like Political or Whine & Cheese, or I predict your stay here will be short.

Just like Cobalt said:

because he thought it was venemous, he just said that.

Sorry others... "rant" off, now.

P_man,

I hope I understood well your words, and those were talken to Lycosa.
as I'm quite new on the forum, and don't have too many posts...but I think I'm far from "trolling"...
I understand your points, and have a respect to it.
My reaction was like that, because I try to respect every living form in it's element, and I had a long "relationship" with reptiles. ( I have learned to become a herpetologist)
actually one of my friends died from a bite of a cottonmouth.
respect, and clear head.

and while it's a knife related forum, I really would love to see those scales on a nice sheath.;)
