OT: how the times have changed

Did you read or hear of the recent court decision that limits police searches of personal items at the Convention, like suitcases, to only specific known threats?

When a device goes off some day, I'll wish the Judge was there to experience the loss of civil life, let along liberty.

Haven't heard anything about that decision. You talking about searches on the subway or trains, or really within the confines of the cenvention area?

The official site stipulates that one will not be allowed to enter with even a sealed envelope:

As far as I can the entire affair (for both parties) has morphed into nothing but an expensive, empty four-day political advertisement that we all pay for, and that severely inconveniences those who are unfortunate enough to live or work where it occurs.

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/183114_demsetup22.html

...5,000 delegates and 15,000 members of the media jockeying for space and attention. At a cost of $95 million, it will be one of the most expensive conventions ever...

...Policy discussions will be kept to a minimum and celebrities will come into the mix as organizers hope their star power will attract usually uninterested views...

...Much of Hollywood is expected to decamp to Boston for the week. It will be an eclectic crew -- among those likely to attend are Ben Affleck, Sean Astin, Larry David and the Red Hot Chili Peppers...

...The interstate that runs past the FleetCenter, where the convention will be held, will be closed to traffic between 4 p.m. and 1 a.m. A major rail station near the FleetCenter will also be closed. Most boats will be banned from floating into Boston Harbor or the Charles River. And those allowed will be subject to random searches by the Coast Guard.

...Boston officials have urged downtown workers to stay home and everybody is bracing for massive traffic snarls. City officials have advised pedestrians not to wear backpacks or carry bags near the convention area...

...A bigger worry is the collective national yawn that greets conventions. The last ones in 2000 earned the lowest TV ratings in nearly 40 years. Only 15.3 percent of households tuned in to the Democratic convention and 13.9 percent for the Republican, according to a study by Harvard University's Vanishing Voter Project. In 1960, Harvard researchers found viewership was twice as large.

The three major networks are essentially taking a pass on the convention, planning to air only one hour each on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and skipping Tuesday's proceeding's entirely...

...Indeed, one of the most memorable moments in recent conventions came in 1996 when Ted Koppel packed up and left in the middle of the Republican National Convention, complaining there was no news...

Somebody convince me it isn't anything more than a big party for a bunch of self-important people. I think I'd rather watch hours of the "Hollywood Squares" a la Clockwork Orange.

It's estimated it will cost $50 million and the federal govt. is paying for it and then another same amount for the next one???? Is this good? Our tax $$ at work??

Firkin- heard it on Oreily last night briefly- searches in the Convention center. Now, the decision does not rule out searches, but makes them harder- Bill O and the lawyer guest debated and I missed it.

Great--looks like another case of "no rules for me, but rules for everybody else"...

Just like "gun control" (I can afford to hire security guards), "planned multi-family housing" (but I'll live in a mansion with considerable acreage, thank you), "fuel-efficient vehicles" (I need SUVs for my security personel, and entourage), and "conservation" (without tropical hardwood panels and decks it wouldn't be a mansion).

I thought one of the ideas of this country was to be rid of tax-supported royalty. Not to mention a similarity to the Sandy Berger flap now unfolding.

Disgusting.

I honestly think what drives me the craziest are the sheeple that
neither think critically nor take the time to find out who they are actually voting for. Just the fact that some of the candidates regardless of the fact that they are visible nitwits or loons are garaunteed almost 50 percent of the less than 50 percent who vote is scary
