There's a new miniseries on TNT called "Into the West." Its purported aim is to tell the story of westward expansion from the perspective of both the Native Americans and the White settlers. I just watched the first installment yesterday. I'm no expert, but I think it has potential. It will be interesting to see what the writers can do with a 12 hour miniseries, instead of just the normal 2-3 hours that go into a movie.

If anybody is interested, TNT is showing it again tonight. I'm not sure what time exactly, but it's on DirecTv at 6:00 p.m.

Yes, I watched it twice now, once with the AK Bowie laying on top of my belly and once with my 54 Calibre Hawken. Seemed appropriate at the time.

One thing I liked was the division in the ndn camp about the meaning of visions. Loved by Buffalo, (that his name?) saw the wooden wheel crushing the stone wheel (medicine wheel) and was accused of being possessed of a capricious spirit. Then he was basically driven out of camp to hopefully die of small pox.

So some of the sugar coat I feared, being as how this is Spielberg, wasn't there. In the real world, ignorance and jealosy play a big role, and I was glad to see the NDN's suffering from the same. That's life.

I visited the Medicine Wheel west of the Big Horns in Wyoming once. Strange experience.

Thanks for reminding me about this, I'll watch it tonight. I like history warts and all, I hope this delivers.

I thought this thread was about elves sailing into the west....
That was Lord of the Rings warn't it? ;) :D

I haven't watched ITW yet and don't know if I can bring myself to do so. When an ndn has a name like "Loved by the Buffalo" or some such sh*t I gotta figure it's not gonna be too flippin accurate, but if Barb watches it I may catch bits and pieces while I'm settin here at the pooter. :grumpy:

I've made some folks really mad by pickin apart the ndn movies while we were watchin them.
Especially when I was tellin Wes Studi to let the bitch go over the cliff instead of trying to get her to come with him. :p ;)
Even people who think they know me well don't always know when I'm serious and when I ain't.;) Even Barb and as long as we've been together.
That stoic assed ndn face does come in handy at times, course it can get yer ass kicked too. ;)

Speaking of which...remind me Edutsi. Do I simply cut a strip of deerskin, then split it in half width wise except for the last inch or so, wet it and roll it to make the cords?

Yup, leave it uncut about an inch on Both ends for a short "tail."
Actually I like to leave maybe 1-1/2" - 1-3/4" uncut on both ends and then cut from the outside in leaving a longer tail if it's appropriate, a 3/8" - 5/16" uncut area is about right in between.
Otherwise I'd cut 'em down to about 3/8" or so depending on the thickness of the skin. The thinner it is the less I leave uncut. Also depends on how wide you are cutting the thong, don't go there guys it's not That Kind of thong. :p ;) :D
On a real narrow one with thin skin I'd only leave an 1/8 inch uncut.
You'll know when it "looks" right.
Be sure and have something heavy to put on the ends while it's drying so it doesn't unroll.
And make sure to put the weight right on the ends so it doesn't smoosh the round thong.;)
Also get it really wet and then strip out the excess or squeeze it until most of the water is out before rolling it tight.
Seems kinda dumb but it needs to be wet all the way through and doing it like that insures it. :D
