Here's my quick, immediate, gut impression:
People are inherently good, but many parents screw their kids up. Or some kids are mentally sick and will always be that way. Damm.
Also, human, as well as animal nature is generally a harsh thing. Survivalist. It's nice to help your friends, but like it or not, there will be times when somebody does not like you and wants to hurt you. Point is, there are hostile people out there.
Whether they wish to harm you with their bare hands, wire, guns, tanks, words, it doesn't really matter except for efficiency and intent.
Thus, the solution is not to restrict the weapons or to try to make society a bunch of sheeple. Society will never be sheeple. People like those here will always fail to accept this standardized mentality. And restricting weapons doesn't work because psychos can always hurt. Only the sane and law-abiding will obey such regulations.
Thus, the solution i prefer is this: prepare yourself. If some crazed SOB runs up to you with a Ka-bar, be prepared to fight back. This isn't some macho thing. It's practical. It's natural. The article proves it happens, and America has a LOT more violence per capita than Great Britain.
People call me paranoid or think me odd for always carrying a knife of some size. I generally just respond by saying they're useful. Let they keep their silly preconceptions. If they want to debate the subject with me, I know I can win.
Societal apathy and general acceptance of public protection (LEO) as the end-all is not a good idea IMO. In cases such as that illustrated in the article, the need for self-defense and preparedness is vividly illustrated. I don't accept the move away from individualism. I reserve the right to watch my own back if I want. I reserve the right to help out an old guy who's being senselessly mugged, such as in the article. Not everybody feels this need, but I do.
I've said my piece. It's late. It's Christmas eve. Probably not as well-written as it could have been, but I expect that this audience will recieve it well regardless. After all, I'm not the only one here who likes *big* knifes!
Merry Christmas, all.
Best wishes always.
