OT: Leather 4 Making a Sheath?

I have made a couple of leather sheaths in the past which turned out ok. But now I would like to make some high quality sheaths for my Busse knives. I will probably get the hand tools etc from Tandy.

But when it comes to the leather, I understand that Wickett & Craig has the high quality leather to go for. Tandy seems to sell only huge quantities anyway- minimum 14- 23 sqr Ft! My need is more like 4- 6 sqr ft of 2 different thicknesses.

The problem is that Wickett & Craig doesn’t have any online order system and I am not sure if they even sell smaller quantities to other countries? I live in Southeast Asia, so it would be convenient if I could order online.

I am hoping that someone here can point me to an online company reselling smaller quantities of Wickett & Craig leather for hobby craft. Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks,

Maybe there is quality leather closer to your home that you can buy?

I'd like to see some of your current sheaths just for fun. I tried making sheaths out of leather, and nearly went suicidal, haha. Think I'll try Kydex.

Wickett and Craig only sell sides as far as I know. The last time I was over they were talking that they may start selling double shoulders, but even at that it will be much more leather than you are looking for. A side of leather is between 23-28 sq ft. It really doesnt last too long if you are going to make sheaths. I think they will ship about anywhere. Just call and see what they can do. They do have something they call their bone pile which is extra pieces from large orders. It is not junk or anything, they sometimes have smaller pieces (not bellies) in it and they are often different weight leathers.

No, unfortunately I have not been able to find a good leather source closer to home. And all those I have found so far, do not cut their leather. I think it’s an overkill to buy 2 x 23-28 sq ft of 2 different thicknesses for making 2 leather sheaths!

I guess then I just have to order from Wickett and Craig and then start a small leather business on the side. ;)

I just made this small “friction-sheath” for my AD using a small piece of already colored leather I found at home. The leather had some scratches on it already and I didn’t have any proper leather tools.

So with proper tools and leather, I am confident I can make a real good sheath. :)

Thanks!
