OT-Machete to knife conversion

That's pretty cool. I think the steel in an ontario machete might be a bit soft for decent edge holding though.

Waste of a good machete, guy ought to take up whittling, there's plenty two-by-fours waiting to be turned into toothpicks.:grumpy:

You're right on the blade hardness Josh, right around 45 RC. Fine for a springy blade that's going to be wacking brush/vegetation, not so good for an all around knife (57-59 RC would be much preferred).

Forgive my ignorance, but why did he put a hole in the middle of the blade? Doesn't that lessen it's strength?

Stay away from the power tools, and any temptation to try this kind of silliness will likely disappear.

Wonder if this is a case where the machete suffered a blow-out like Cliff has described?

It's a cho. :D

I'm kind of worried that my khuk will look like that when I try to make it convex.

I have this "Chinese broad sword" I'm turning into a machete with the help of a Dremel. I've had it for years and it just sits collecting dust. No distal taper, no edge bevel, way too heavy. I don't know what its "spring steel" is but I just need a machete to go after the ivy so I'm not too worried about chipping it. Maybe I'll finally get some use out of it.

I think this is just what was left after he tried to sharpened his machete.

If the machete already had such a low rockwell rating, wonder how many more Rcs were taken off by the heat generated by the dremel. Anyhoo $20 for a butter knife is too rich for my blood.:D

I suspect that "hole" you see is what the creator called a blood groove. If you'd like to read more about the deadly anti suctioning channel pressure relieving blood groove go here: Blood Grooves
