Guys,

I have been using this program for a week and it's great. Barb was just telling me it was featured on a CNN tech update today. Basically it lets you preview email on your server before it gets to your computer and allows you to eliminate spam and virus emails easily.
If you have a problem with too many junk emails or they aggravate you as much as they do me, give it a try. Oh, and its freeware.

Here is the email you get when you send it to a friend:

I just wanted to let you know that I'm using MailWasher, a program
designed to keep out unsolicited commercial email (otherwise known as
spam) and email viruses from your computer, so I've just got it to write you a quick email message.

It also allows you to preview and delete emails before you download them, like emails with large attachments or viruses. So you never have to download bad emails again.

Plus a really handy feature allows you to bounce emails back to people so it looks like your address doesn't exist. So if you're getting a lot of unsolicited email or you gave your email address to the wrong person you can now bounce it back to them so they can take your name off their list.

It's free and easy to download and use. Just click on the link below:

Great little program. However, it's not as effective for high-speed, live-email accounts like mine. I've resigned myself to a life of Spam-weeding.

I have made this bulk-mail filter in Outlook Express that is huge...
It does its job most of the time.

Maybe next major upgrade.

My ISP offered an e-mail protection for I think it was $10.00 a year that I'm mighty happy with.
The program also helps to stop viruses from getting to our computer's and I don't have Any Spam!!!!:D It's really almost unbelieveable.
It took me awhile to figure out how to read any messages with an attachment, but that was mostly my fault because of the way I had my e-mail configured.:o
When I was on the WebTV the spam was getting ridiculous, but nowhere near as bad as what Dan describes.

I could possibly inquire about the program if anyone's interested and see if it's available to the general public and not just ISPs?

Yvsa - keep us posted.

sideline note: I do marketing for websites and when I submit to search engines, I get hammered with about 500-700 emails within 48 hours. (per website) It usually trickles off within 3-4 weeks, but may add up to around 1000-1200 spam emails per site.

So, I've built an account just for collecting spam - seems to work ok.

However, that has nothing to do my personal email accounts. My old yahoo accounts used to each get 60-80 per week. Thankfully, I no longer use them.

I know this may sound like a lot, but considering that I answer probably around 200-400 emails per week, it's really not that bad.

The bulk filter I use with Outlook Express goes somthing like this:

If the From line does not contain:
***long list of email addresses***
or,
if the Subject line contains:
***list of nasty words***
or,
if the To/CC line does not contain:
***my email accounts***
or,
if the message body contains the following words:
***long list of words that would make Barbara blush***
or,
if the message is from the [spam email - see above] account,

...plus several other rules/filters too messy to explain

Move it to the Deleted Items folder

Then, I just quickly check my deleted items folder once a day or so to make sure a real email didn't get accidently put there, and Oila! at the end of the day, it all flushes down the toilet.

Sure, it's extra work, and time is money, blah, blah, blah...but I'm too lazy to come up with something else. :p
