I am currently having a problem with my PE class in school. I need another .5 credits to graduate (one quarter is .5 credits). My options are Individual/Team Sports, Aerobic Fitness (almost entirely female, the one exception I know of is a male friend who was constantly being mistaken for a girl at first glance because of the unlikelyness of a male attending), and finally weight training. Befor I go lifting weights I need to get in the shape that allows me to lift weights for any real period of time.

Anyway... has anyone ever heard of a school allowing off campus (not during school hours) martial arts training (any MA) to count as credit. I realize that the sensei or master, or whoever, would have to sign something that says I did x amount of training.

I'd take the Girlie Class. I'll bet it will be good for at least a couple of "dates". They might even let you shower with them.

The thing about weights is that if you're out of shape you just use less weight.

(Take the girlie class. Though I probably wouldn't have when I was in High School, I would now) :)

You would need to confirm this with the registrar's office and even if they allow it, the curriculum would have to meet standards to be accredited.
Weight training is probably not what you imagine and time very well spent. You train at your own pace and begin at a level that is right for you. If you take the girlie class, remember that the best view is from the back of the room.

If you're looking to burn calories, the aerobic class is going to do it a lot faster than the weight training. Actually, alternating between the 2 would be great.

I'd be surprised if the school allowed off-campus credits. Monitoring/accreditting an outside source is probably more than the thinly-stretched budgets of most school districts can handle. I have no facts to back up that impression; just illogic.

I take a spinning (indoor cycling) class almost every workday at noon. At least 50% female. I sit in the back row, and not because I'm shy.

Good luck.

You'll get the greatest long-term benefits from the weight-lifting class. Attend, pay attention and put what they say to the test. Do your best, but don't overdo it - no matter what everybody else is doing. That is the best advice I have ever had regarding fitness and I'm passing it along to you. ;)

Take the weight training. You can usually go at your own pace and start with less weight. It's good for you and will make you a lot stronger. Then go observe the aerobics class. While the aerobics is very good for you, all girls look great doing it and all guys look gay doing it. If you do take the girlie class make sure you are on the back row, at least make it worth it.

oops...left one thing out...

re: the "girlie class"

I've "been there, done that" and no matter what your intentions, ALL the girls in the class are suspicious of you, even if you're there with your GF. Never been snubbed so much - harsh crowd. They're there to work, not play. Erase all "Porky's" ideas from your head....:D

Even worse if you end up with one of the "power aerobics" teachers - she'll work you like a dog and make you look like an idiot...

My wife and I joined a gym this summer, until I managed to make myself sick, I was going on a pretty regular basis, 3 times a week 1 hour to 1.5 hours a visit.

Although I'm not the sort the pretty women would be looking at, it is amazing how little fraternization occurs there. Hell more flirting goes on at my work than at the gym.

The women are serious, the men don't want to get kicked out. Normally I learn a lot just by observing, there I hate to do it, it makes me feel like a perv. Well just cause I'm a perv doesn't mean I have to feel like one does it?

I'm just a perv American.

BTW yoippari,

If you do take the aerobics class (which I recommend against) be careful how you act. They really are all watching you, you are on their turf.

I recieved my 1st dan Black in Taekwondo in high school. I trained outside of my high school and got PE credit for it. I got credit all 4 years for it. I'd ask if I were you as they should honor it.

I'm going to e-mail the vice principal (who btw is refered to as adolf by a friend of mine due to a mustache he had for many years) and present my argument. Mostly it will consist of: MA is something that I will likely do for years to come, and even if I don't keep with it all the MAs I am looking into teach more about control and calm than how to break a 2x4.

No I will not bring up the adolf thing.

If that doesn't work out I will probably go with weights. I would be in the begining class since I havent taken it befor. My one fear (ok one of my fears) is that I will be overwhelmed with freshmen.

The only aerobics that I have seen them do is running (most just walk) around the track. I am curious what else is involved. And as for sitting in the back, while the view might be nice I don't want them thinking I am a perv since I usually get along with girls better with guys. Perhaps there is some unseen motivation guiding me there?

"Girlie class"
When I pledged a fraternity, they made us go to an aerobics class. Not ONE of us could keep up with them, and we had a couple out of us twelve in better than average shape. Unless you are in good shape already, they will kill you and you will feel like a total wimp. I did anyhow. Most aerobics girls are serious about it and in serious shape too. Don't mess with them.

45-70,
My gym is just like that too. I refer to it as The Temple of Self-absorption. I try to be friendly and smile, but usually get a blank stare for my trouble.

thats just insecurity.

I used to work out with real pros (ronnie coleman) and they were all friendly.

Back during my days at Modesto J.C. ( California ) I took a class in ballroom dance. Foxtrot ( yuck ), waltz ( nice ) tango ( fun ) swing ( not too bad ) samba and others. Would surprise my wife if I ever told her ( doesn't know I know how ), but got A's both times I took it.

Also took Firearms I and II at Univ. of Nevada. Instructor was head of the county crime scene investigation unit. We paid close attention to his recommendations on stopping power, as he made sure he attended all the "officer involved shooting" autopsies. Also got A's twice.

Got a reply. The Vice Principal said:
Jacob, because you have plenty of opportunities this year to take PE you will still need to complete that requirement. I would still encourage you to pursue the Martial Arts as well but, unfortunately, I can't offer you credit for that.
Oh well, I still don't think I will get much more out of it than half a credit.

You should have beat him up. :D ;)

Now there's more reason to take the girlie class. :)

Bonus points for giving it your all.
