Hi Guys,

My sister in Columbus is keeping me updated, but it looks like my mom has had several mini-strokes (Transitory Ischemic Attacks or TIAs) in the last week or so. She`s being released from hospital today and I don`t believe there`s been any permanent damage. But I don`t know what the future holds right now.
I don`t know if I`ll be moving back to Wauseon now or what. I`ve gotta discuss things with my wife here in Japan and my sister back in Ohio. Moving the whole family back to the States isn`t an option right now. And my folks may need to go into some kind of assisted living situation anyway, so even if I move back by myself I don`t know how much time I could spend taking care of them while working to send money back to the wife and kids.
Has anybody else hadto consider finding a home for thier parents? What kind of stuff should I keep in mind when I look around?
Any advise would be welcome right now. This sucks......

I'm very sorry to hear about your Mom, and hope that she will fully recover from these 'mini-strokes'

I have never searched for an assisted-living facility personally, but my Grandmother has been in a few... She suffers from dementia that has slowly & steadily grown worse, even though her physical heath is pretty darn good for being 92...

I heartily recommend asking friends & family, and friends of family if they have heard good or bad things about (insert Assisted-Living Home names here). Ask doctors you or your family trust the opinions of. Visit each several times... Do they appear clean & kept up? Does the staff seem to really care for other clients in the home? Are there various activities on & off site for the clients who live there to keep busy doing? How's the food & is there a dietitian on the staff? Ask about the medical staff, i.e. are there doctors and/or registered nurses always on duty? Use the Internet to search for complaints against the facilities you are considering. The AARP may have recommendations, or a booklet on how to better choose an Assisted Living Home... Just a few ideas, but I'm sure that others will be able to add to this short list.
Again, I'm sorry to hear about your Mom, and hope that things will work out for her, and you in this matter.

I'm also sorry to hear about your Mom! That is never an easy situation to be in...but Jaxx nailed it on selecting a place for her to live (I've done this kind of nursing.) Usually word of mouth is your best bet combined with appearance and how the place "feels" when you visit. I wish good luck to you, and smoke up from Northern AZ!

smoke rising from hawaii. looked into it for my mom in the mid 90's. they wanted like $2500 / mo.. i ended up caring for her while working full time, for 4 1/2 years until she passed. hardest (mentally) thing i ever did. good luck, and god bless.

Thanks alot guys, Those are some good ideas.

Mom is 78 and Dad will be 95 this month. They were doing okay as long aseach had the other to lean on,but I think they`re gonna need help from now on. I`ll start talking to friends and some of the doctors I worked with when I was an EMT, and I`m sure I`ll get some good opinions.

Hope all turns out well bro.

Let me know if I can help.

Is she here in Cow-lumbus, or is that just your sister??

I'm sure they'll remember the Kroger Parking lot...LOL

Mike
