Anyone happen to know any good motorcycle forums? Bikes in general, and Cruisers(particularly Hondas) in particular. Have yet to find a question on any subject that someone in here can't answer, but buying my first bike in a coupla weeks, and don't feel like adding a bunch of OT questions to posts in here(already took my question on helmets to another board to spread out my OT posts, but should probably find a real motorcycle forum ;) )

Thanks guys

Nothing off the top of my head, I'll ask around. Should be thousands.

you be safe now, hear?

Definitely. Don't wanna end up like my dad(and no, he's not dead, thankfully, but still feels effects of old accident). That's why i'm buying bike in two weeks, but taking safety class before I ride it home(buying it beforehand makes me member of Honda Owners club though and they'll reimburse me for part of class). And buying full face helmet and leathers when i buy bike. Sure I'll end up putting it down sometime, part of life, but doing my best to avoid injuries that can be avoided

ept?

BEFORE you buy full leathers (although I know you will look sexy as hell, and beauteous buxom babes will ogle you as you stop in traffic), investigate some of the alternatives...Aerostich, Riderwear....they have rain-proof cabilities, air-flow design for ventilation, and if you look at the distance riders, most have gone over to this type of riderwear, which is as abrasion-proof and much more functional.

Prices vary...not cheap, but skin-savers with pockets that protect you in the rain.

Getting the Honda Aero 750. Been a long road deciding on that though. :) Wanted the Magna, discontinued(probalby better, as while 750 might be too much for a starting bike if I'm not careful, 16 valve, V4 sport bike/cruiser combo 750 would definitely be too much ;) ). Wanted Shadow Spirit 750, was discontinued. Guys at Honda shop were helpful, but with those bikes both unavailable, was looking at a Kawasaki Vulcan 750 or 800. So went by local shop. And salesmen there wouldn't even talk to me. So decided not going to get a Vulcan, as if guys won't even help me when I'm looking at dumping 5-7K in their shop, how likely are they to help me with little problems. So finally decided on the Aero. I'm not a huge fan of the classic styling, but it is growing on me. And yes, i plan on turning my own wrenches as much as possible, but still want a good shop with a good maintenance department to help if I need it.

And Kismet, was being sort of general with term leathers. haven't decided yet on synthetic vs. leather. least, not for jacket/pants. I did already go with synthetics for the gloves(though they have leather grips). Thanks for the tip on that though.

Definitely doing a lot of research on everything before I buy. buying a bike is rather towards end of my budget, but gotta get it now while I'm single, before I have gf/wife to tell me I can't afford it, it's unsafe,a nd that I'm not allwoed to spend my money on it. ;)

I sold my Aero 1100 this past Fall. Loved the bike and never gave me a single problem other than the battery had to be replaced under warrenty due to a design flaw. I fell in love with the retro styling. The first modification I did make was to replace the stock seat. Made a world of differance. I also replaced the stock exhaust with a Vance and Hines set. You will be very pleased with the Aero.

ept????

If I didn't say it before: THINK USED...especially with modern Japanese bikes. Folks still think 20K is a lot of miles...but the metallurgy and design of these things is astonishing...they will go forever !!! Look in the paper, folks start...then stop after the allure goes out. Huge savings...truly, and at most, all you usually have to do is change the rubber, oil and have the valves checked for adjustment and you are good to go!

If possible, ask the instructors at the MSF place, they are mostly very bike-savvy, and can steer you to 1, a deal; 2, some garage mechanic who can take care of your bike as well as any shop. (An aside: Al, the guy who works on the UJM I have, was shop manager of two different honda/yamaha/suzi shops in anther town, rebuilds engines for a car race replica deal using yamaha engines, and stays at home these days while his wife, pursues her career as an OR nurse...which is why he moved near here.) These guys are around, you just have to find them.

Think used. and move to the 2-4 thousand range...or lower. It's your first bike after a while...you will get others...trust me.

I ahve been thinking used, and still giving it some thought, just sorta want to treat myself on this one. And avoid picking up someone else's problems. Never bought myself a new car, and good chance a I never will(hope to be married by time I need to replace my truck, and then I expect I'll do things way my parents did, where I'll always have a used car and will buy the new, and hopefully, more reliable, vehicle for my wife so she doesn't have to worry about things). Also, since I don't know bikes as well as I know cars/trucks(though I'm sure going to learn), dont' trust myself to be able to identify any potential problems with a used bike. If I lived clsoer to my aprents, would bring my dad along shopping and consider used, but the 850 mile gap makes for a bit of a drive too pick him up. ;)

Sure I'll buy other bikes in future, heck, I count on it. :) To help put that off fo ra while though, is why i decided on the 750/800 class cruisers. I wanted a bike I could take on road trips(aforementioned 850 miles is main one), but that was not too big for a starting bike. So that knocked out anything 1000cc and above. Gave some thought to a smaller bike, as a 250 or 600 really might be better to start, but only one I really gave thought to was the Honda VLX(584cc), but with only a 4 speed, just can't see it(and reviews seem to agree) really making me happy on road trips, which means I'd be looking to replace it after first trip, which would end up costing me more in long run.

I definitely will ask around for local shops though at safety class, and have a guy here at work who I'm sure would help me, and works on everything from the Vespa who's pistons he jsut reringed to a large variety of Fords. Great guy, and sure he'd help me.

Heck though, buying a new bike, bewsides a first check of the valves after a few hundred miles, shouldn't be too much maintenance wise as llong as I stay on top of oil changes.

I do expect thought hat on next bike, and any after that, will buy used and take care of my own wrenching, just like I do on cars now(least, for most things)

Been lookin' at an Aero or Sabre too.....but the larger size....

Thanks for the link, Mark.

The best thing about the Aero was the engine configuration. It had the piston rods attached on the same side of the crankshaft , like a harley. I used to have fun taking the baffles out of the pipes when I would ride with my harley riding friends. One friend has been a mechanic all his life. When I fired the bike up with the throttle craked open, his jaw about fell into his lap. "Holy CRAP it's too loud" was his response. He told me in private that he loved it but his friends would dog hime to death if he had one. The 1100 would easilly smoke a stock 1340 harley.

Lots of Jap bikes will smoke a stock Harley. But then, you're still riding a rice burner. :)

And friends don't let friends ride rice burners. ;)

When I get done rebuilding my latest toy I will post a picture. I made up and welded on a European front fender plate. On the plate it reads "Got Rice?" in Japanese. Thanks to some forumites for turning me on to a translation website.

I've also had my eye on a stripped-down Boss Hoss for a while....;)

MMMM Boss-Hoss, Nothing like having the power to do a burnout at 100 mph. I've got the hankering to build my own bike someday. think it would be cool to use a nice BMW eingine with a long stretched frame with lots of fiberglass covers. sort of a Darth Vader Arlen Ness look in wrought Iron Black with a lone BMW symbol on the tank. Oh And a supercharger with a sneeky Pete nitrous system of course. Someday.

When I was little, my mother used to ride. She belonged to one of the first motorcycle clubs in the country, The Friendly Riders. The other members of the gang would make fun of her because they all rode big Harleys or Nortons and she rode a little Indian Scout.

I remember going to hill climbs and watching these guys try to drive their bikes straight up the side of a mountain. And I also remember some of them riding by my grandmother's house doing handstands on their seats and handlebars to show off for my mother.

But what really sticks in my mind is being sandwiched between my mother and her boyfriend as they rode down the highway. I was terrified, and to this day I am still scared to death of riding a motorcycle.

This was all a long time ago. There were no Japanese bikes in the USA, and the Japanese bikes in Japan had just become radioactive.

Saw a very nice custom 3-wheeler on the rode yesterday...lady in the back seat was kickin' back, enjoying the ride....gotta admit it was a heckuva ride.
