Just finished watching the "Underworld" DVD rental.

Good action movie with a decent story, effects, & acting;
if you don't mind the neverending gun battles.
The gunplay (who made up -that- word)
went a bit long sometimes.
Vampires vs Werewolves blood-feud.
Lots of blades waved around in flashbacks,
but not many used.
The story-line was well handled when the guns
weren't getting loud.

Think of "The Long Kiss Goodnight" [another I recommend]
edited together with "Blade II"
and a bare hint of the "Matrix";
that will give you an idea of "Underworld".

Saw it recently too, had a few issues with the story. There was a plot, and even a twist, but no real conclusion. I kept thinkin Blade wuz gonna show up and wipe em all out! Hee ehee.

Worth the rent if you're into wampires and verevolves.

No real conclusion because they are set up for a sequel?

And I was pretty satisfied with the conclusion of
having the 'preserved' vampire about to revive
as 'half werewolf'.
And the 2 heroes both survived.

Only real complaint was firearms with mounted lights that were not turned on when facing someone close by in the dark-
ie, there's a bogie somewhere in this dark corner, but all of us with mounted SureFires don't think of using them while Mr. BG keeps coming out of the dark, and snatching one of us.

Final swordfight is one of the best I've seen in any movie- perhaps as good as the knife fight in Soldier. (In other words, short, quick and effective.)

oh, I missed that. Sequel, right. Forgot about the setup for the M vamp and the Lycan blood.

Seemed like they spent all that time making that dude into a hybrid fer nuthin!

Guess we'll hafta hold out fer UWII: The wrath of the Hybrids!

I hate movies who waste time with filler like plot and character development.

I thought it was okay, the vampires were easily killed while the werewolves took more hits to put down. I figured the two would be on equal ground, but in this movie it clearly gives the edge to the werewolves. The Hybrid thing was cool but I would have liked to seen more of him fighting and such. I give it a 3 outta 5 stars.

I guess writing is a dead art, what with all the voyeuristic loveliness of hi-tech eye-flash. I prefer the Blade school of vamp flash movies.

Anyone seen 5th element? Has it all.

5th Element was good. Milla Jovovich is a babe. :)

I like Underworld, but there's one little thing that keeps digging at me about the last fight scene, where she cut the old vampire's head apart with the sword. Why didn't they just show his head flying apart? It would have been so much better than having hold together and then fall apart in a obvious and very cheap special effect. Did that bother anyone else?

There is an idea in some martial schools that an extremely skilled swordsman with a very sharp sword can cut through some someone's head so swift and well that what was depicted could happen.

I think it's probably just a legend, myself.

Alright!...I'll have to add this to my must rent list.

How much better 'd this be if she was using a khukuri...

Yaaaaaay! Something I have at least some knowlege in!!! :D

Any of you guys ever heard of World of Darkness (WOD)? Most goths know of it. I'm not certain, but Underworld may be based off of that Role-Playing Universe.

Lycanthropes are, according to the games and the storyline, more than man, more than beast, they are the best of both worlds, so to speak. That doesn't leave the Vamps out though, as they're almost as fast. Being undead, their flesh is tough, but not as tough as Lycanthropes. Being soulless or something to that nature, they can be totally invisible to mortals at a whim; children and animals, being more attuned to life and nature are the only normal mortals that can see them. The only way a Vampire could match a Lycanthrope toe-to-toe (or toe-to-claw :D) is for the vampire to invest heavily on an attribute called "Fortitude"... The "traditional" weaknesses of vampire's banes are mostly useless; crosses or symbols of faith are worthless unless true faith is shown. The minute you doubt or show fear, it's effect is gone. Holy water just makes them wet. As does running water. Stakes only paralyses them. Sunlight doesn't do much, just a bad sunburn after a day or two in the open. Only prolonged, intense sunlight will kill them, but only after several weeks! Some vampires can even pull out stakes, albeit very slowly, and garlic only makes you a tastier meal! :D

The dominant Lycanthrope in the universe is the Garou, as they call them, or Werewolf. They can sense the vampires by their dead smell, or something like that, but once engaged in combat, they can see them as clear as day!

I hope I brought some insight here into the topic. If not, or if the movie is based off something else other that WOD or the White Wolf Universe, feel free to ignore me! :footinmou::rolleyes:

Hibuke,

Is this the RPG that has several different "tribes" of vampires that have different abilities? If it is, there was show on Fox several years ago based off of that RPG also. It didn't last that long though. I'm not really into RPG's, but I always thought that Warhammer 40,000 looked pretty cool, the one with the Space Marines.

That's the 1! But they're not called "Tribes". Vampires are organised into "Clans". I thinkl there are 13 Clans in all. The Camarilla (sp?) would be the closest to what you would call "good" vampires...

Yeah, there was a mini-series, by the name of "Kindred", I think, or I could be wrong. It's been a while since I've talked to any Goth-Vampire-philes...

It was cut short 'cos the lead actor was killed in a motorcycle accident. Sad thing, they couldn't continue production.....

Warhammer by and large isn't an RPG by most standards, but it's a start, albeit a very expensive one, speaking from experience as a player! It's but one of the influences that got me interested in blades in the 1st place! :D:D:D

"Kindred" it was right on the tip of my tongue. It was pretty cool show. They had mafia-type vampires and the nosferatu type. Why isn't Warhammer a RPG?

"RPGs" or "Role Playing Games" by and large are targetted at a much older audience and hence have much more mature themes. RPGers tend to be *UBER* geeks. In fact, due to it's cost and the marketing, RPG-ers also look on us Warhammer players as rich spoilt, immature kids. Warhammer is actually a tabletop wargame. Now, there *ARE* Warhammer RPGs or Role-Playing Games set in the Warhammer/40K Universes, but they never really caught on...

I just rented Underworld last night. Not a great movie, but pretty entertaining overall, especially if you like hot women in tight black leather. The werewolves were very well done, and it was refreshing to see a movie that didn't rely entirely on computer-generated special effects.
