OT: mystery macro. Guess what it is!

You'll have to keep guessing on the first one, but here'a another pic I took of Sebago Lake recently (all the more reason to come to the NE KHUK KONVENTION!!!!):

EDIT: Darnit!! this one really doesn't look at ALL like the original, but you get the idea.

Nope not Coral, but good guess The magnification is not very high only 1:1 which means that the object appears the same size on a 35mm slide that it is in real life

It looks like coral.... but, I suspect this is something photographed at a very high level of magnification. It could be just about anything.

It actually looks sort of like some sort of nasty mould

But it's something at high magnification, something which is somewhat porous, by the looks of it - but then again, lots of things are porous to some degree. Also something not entirely 'smooth', considering the little 'mould blooms'.

Yep!! Good guess Its the fungi that grows out of tree trunks (I need to look it up for exact name). This one was growing on a birch log and was about 6" in diameter. I loved the pattern on the underside, and that's what you see here

Rob,

I am soooooo tempted to come to the Konvention. I live near DC and have always wanted to visit Maine.

However, just thinking about a 12-13 hour drive causes me "flashbacks" to the 7 times I drove from Savannah, GA to SLC, UT. 40-50 hours each way!

Perhaps a different location next time? If so, I'd be delighted to attend.
