Off-topic, but does anyone know about the boundaries of Nepal in earlier times? I ask because there seems to be a large Nepali community in Burma and I wondered if they emigrated for some reason or whether it was just that the political boundaries changed.

I don't recall where I read it. On the forum or someplace else. But, I think there has been adjustments to borders of several of the countries in that general area. Wars and treaties and more wars and after each one things change. I will try to keep an eye open for those facts and let you know if I see it again. It is kind of like India and Pakistan now. Fighting over borders if they are not careful.:)

Nepal got pretty agressive for a time and had more territory than they do today. I never have but if I were going to check it out I'd look for some 1800 era maps.

The borders were fluid to say the least in the 17th and 18th centuries. Tibet was actually their biggest problem and they were at war with them on and off for hundreds of years, but they continued trade no matter what. The area of the terai was always up for dispute with India depending on which Prime Minister or King had power that week. I have the details in dozens of books and many differ. I also have maps those periods and they're pretty confusing.
