this is a good site I stumbled across, with many Nepal-resources:

http://nepalresearch.org

and I notice on the front page a titbit about Sherpa women climbing Mt.Everest (=Chomolungma - which I think is the Tibetan name for Everest?)

Once again a very fascinating look at the Nepali people and women in particular this time.

Thanks for the link. I can practically teach a whole semester on your info alone:D

(=Chomolungma - which I think is the Tibetan name for Everest?)

Correct -- this is what the Sherpas and Tibetans call it.

Since people started trying to climb Everest almost 100 years ago Sherpa women have routinely served as "sherpas" -- porters -- carrying the same loads as the men. And, when the day is finished it is generally the women who prepare the evening meal and in the still dark predawn hours arise to prepare the fires, make tea and pancakes -- this is addition to carrying the load all day.

They are strong, capable, determined and resourceful -- not to mention the fact that they somehow manage to maintain a high degree of femininity in harsh conditions and this along with an open and flirtatious manner has captured the hearts of more than a few western climbers and trekkers.

'Sagarmatha' is the Nepali word, if I recall rightly? There's a Chinese word too, but I don't remember.

Correct again, Beo.

I personally feel that Chomolungma is the most appropriate name for that Mountain since about half of it lies in Tibet and the other half lies in the Khumbu which is populated by Sherpas almost exclusively.
