Has anyone else heard the CD "Once" by Nightwish? I think this is the newest form of music. I call it Metal Opera, but the kid says it Gothic Metal. In any way you put it, it is a fascinating combination of instruments and vocals. I think the girl is an awesome singer and the lyrics of this CD are very intriguing and thought provoking. You can listen to one of their songs on Yahoo Launch. Nightwish....Wish I had an Angel. Very good......(and I'm considered an old lady by kid terms.) They are a Finnish band. I've heard the same style music by an Italian and Australian band. All very good. The other 2 bands are Virgin Black and Lacuna Coil.

Anyway.....just my comments on my most interesting Christmas present. Seemed appropriate in light of our thread on the Cantina rock band getting started. ;)

Within the Metal genre, their style is officially called "Power Symphonic", but some of the tracks are just straight "Symphonic". If you like that style, you might also like the "Black Symphonic" style which is similar but more intensely driven.

Ever heard of apocolyptica? Classical cellists go rock. W/ electric cellos. It's pretty cool, I must admit.

Ben Arown knows his metal. Of course, Nightwish is Finnish Power symphonic. There's also German and Italian Power Symphonic--oops edited to add, I didn't see this part in your post, Gin.

Personally, I'm more into thrash. Nevermore is one of my current favorite bands. Warrel Dane is a beast on vocals, and Loomis plays the guitar like a fiend. The rhythm section is near-mechanical in their precision and ferocity. Good metal gets you pumped up!

Nightwish happens to be my friend's favorite band of all time. I like them, but not as much as the more edgy stuff like Nevermore and Iced Earth.

Besides Gillian Welch, I'm afraid the newest music I'm interested in is the Recordings Cash did for American REcords in the 1990's.

Aye, laddie, dinnae let yerself be gettin' ossified now. You need some metal, munk; I can feel it in my pineal gland! If power metal's not your thing, try some Finnish Forest Metal, replete with sounds recorded in nature and lyrics about communing with the wild things. You might even like Troll Metal, a subgenre of Forest Metal with lyrics about the activities of trolls, which, as you might imagine, include a lot of smashing and smiting, and a fair amount of feasting.

Got home with two volumes of 1960's pop/rock music: 6 CD's in each volume. And I remember almost all of those I played on the 2+ hour drive home. Even the ones I didn't remember at first kind of ring a bell.

Time to get out the rocking chair and keep changing channels til I find reruns of Lawrence Welk and Hee-Haw. OmiGawd, I'm becoming musially decrepit!!! Noooo

( They used to have bubble gum rock - PLEASE don't tell me that I'm on the slippery slope to Pepto-Bismol and Geritol rock! )

Music...let me see!! ZZ TOP,The Fabulous Thunderbirds,Waylon,Jimmie & Stevie Ray Vaugn,Terri Clark,Kim Wilson & Joe Cotton Yep,got it covered!! :D
THE DUCK!

I'm going to see a show 1/30 with John Hammond, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Richard Shindell, Sonny Landreth and Clarence Gatemouth Brown.

The last 2 albums I bought were Universal House of Prayer, but Buddy Milller and Together We're Heavy by The Polyphonic Spree. ;)

I have several CDs that never leave my truck. When I get tired of listening to NPR on the radio, I stick in a ZZ or a Double Trouble to clean out the space between my ears.

I love this group. I don't know whether to call them a "Choir" or a "Big Band". They could use some help with their choreography and costumes though. Tourette's Syndrome and pastel bed sheets just don't cut it.

Hey Ben,

Do you get Mountain Stage on your local Public Radio? That's the show I'm going to end of Jan. Looks like it is carried on 2 CA stations:
CA - CALIFORNIA

Arcata KHSU 90.5 FM Sat 1 pm
Crescent City KHSR 91.9 FM Sat 1 pm

Polyphonic Spree - a little Godspell, a little Supertramp, a little Beatles, and then throw in Jesus Christ Superstar and blend well and you've got it ;)

Those stations are too far away for me to pick up. The only time I get them is when I'm travelling north on 101.

Just picked up "Death Cult Armageddon" by Dimmu Borgir, and it made me think of this thread. Great album. Great production, and nonstop shred. Symphonic black metal rocks!

I dislike country music. But there is something about JOhnny Cash's voice that justs affects me. I truly miss that man, but I hope to never miss his voice.
