I received this email from one of my company's employees who is serving in Iraq. He is a transportation unit commander. I thought I would share with all of my friends on the HI forum. Rusty, Bill, if this is not appropriate here feel free to move it to another forum.
I eliminated names to keep confidential.
"You will hear this today on the news. My unit the XXXXTrans Co. had a soldier killed in an ambush Saturday night. just letting everyone know that it was not myself or Sgt. _____. One of my convoys was ambushed about 75 miles south of Baghdad, as they were moving a unit into an area where fighting was taking place, as they went through a small town during the night when they ran into an enemy ambush that killed 3 soldiers including one of mine. He was one of my platoon leaders, and a good friend, and one of my tent mates. His wife was expecting their first child in June.
I had just returned from a 2 week mission in Iraq. My convoy received some 20 mortar rounds on our position while we were staying over night in Baghdad. Besides the mortars, myself and 10 other soldiers were in a 20 minute fire fight in Baghdad, one thing Hollywood has gotten correct is what a bullet sounds like going by your head. We made them pay a price in advance for the life of my LT. Things are worse now than one year ago. These guys are cowards and will not fight us in the open, they will hide behind civilians, or in a building that has people around it or try to surrender after they shoot at us. Very few get the chance at that. Anyway all days are not bad, we do have some nice things around us.
One thing about being in a war zone is this, it brings the important things into clear focus for you. "
